After ten years on Davison between Dexter and Wildemere, she moved to Oak Park in 1954 ... as one of its business pioneers. MAIL DEPT. ... "HaVing been a fan and reader of yours since the 1950s, I was shocked to read in your column of May 23, 1986, under `Reader Writes asking why so many healthy people are given handicapped permits,' and your answer, 'Be- ats me ...Then again, why are so many working folks on wel- fare?' "I too am handicapped (myes- thenia gravis, and arthritis of both knees). To look at me one could never tell anything is wrong. Makeup and wigs take care of that. Only if one was to spend some time with me could a person tell. What about people with heart conditions, etc.? "Having been through a bad experience recently, I decided to write. My husband and I had gone out to a restaurant and parked in the handicapped area. People parked next to us (two adults and three children) came over to see if we had a handi- capped sticker on our car. "Would greatly appreciate if you wrote something in your column for the many handi- capped people, in answer to the readers." Name Withheld "Today's Listening Post has some readers asking, Why so many healthy people are given handicapped parking stickers?' I'm one of them and don't even use the privilege all the time. I have it because I have arthritis. I hurt 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and when the hurt is in weight-bearing joints (like hips), the closer parking space really helps. When it is not in weight-bearing joints, I park in. the back (in regular parking spots). The state and my doctor have both said this is appropri- ate for me, and I resent people assuming that I am wrong with- out knowing the background. I'll trade the constant pain for the parking sticker — any takers? Don't judge without the facts." Name Withheld CONGRATS ... To thaw frozen fruit or berries quickly, put the box or bag in a zip-lock plastic bag and let stand in warm water for 20 minutes ... Marshmallows can stay fresh for an indefinite length of time when frozen ... Cheese can be kept moist and fresh longer by soaking a little cheese-cloth in white wine vinegar and wrap- ping in it . . . When using both of them, try combining salt and pepper in a large shaker for use during cooking . . . It saves time and effort.
