Demjanjuk, a former U.S. citizen who is the first suspected war criminal extradited to Israel, has been in detention at Ayalon prison for 90 days, the limit under the law which pro- vides that remands in custody must be renewed every 15 days. This had been done by Jeru- salem Chief Magistrate Aharon Simcha. Attorney General Yitzhak Zamir accordingly appealed to the Supreme Court for an order to hold the prisoner an addi- tional 90 days. Supreme Court Justice Yaacov Maltz issued the 30 day order after a hearing at the prison. Zamir said there is hard evidence that Demjanjuk joined the SS in May, 1942, that he underwent training and was posted to Treblinka where he personally killed hundreds of thousands of Jews. He reported- ly operated the gas chambers and earned the name "Ivan the Terrible" because of his sadistic treatment of the camp inmates. Demjanjuk has claimed he is a victim of mistaken identity. But Zamir said he has given con- tradictory testimony with respect to names and dates to support his contention that he had been a Russian prisoner of war at the time "Ivan the Ter- rible" was active at Treblinka. Zamir said Treblinka sur- vivors identified Demjanjuk from photographs. In addition, he said, the Israeli police have an identification document seized by the Soviets at the end of the war which contains a photograph of Demjanjuk and physical details, including a back scar which the detainee has. The Attorney General re- jected Demjanjuk's claim that the document is a forgery in- tended by the Soviets to in- criminate him. Weizman, a Minister without Portfolio who has long sought improved relations with Egypt, had been sent here by Prime Minister Shimon Peres in an ef- fort to persuade the U.S. to reassert itself in the peace effort and in the still unresolved dispute between Egypt and Israel over Taba. Taba is the small strip of territory on Israel's southern border which both countries claim and whose status was left unresolved with Israel's withdrawal from the Sinai in 1982. Weizman met twice with Sec- retary of State George Shultz, but failed to persuade him to undertake a new visit to the region. "The Secretary is always look- ing for an opportunity to be helpful if the United States can be, in connection with the Mid- dle East Peace Process," State Department Spokesman Ber- nard Kalb said. But he added that Shultz had no plans to go to the Middle East at this time. State Department Legal Ad- viser Abraham Sofaer is cur- rently in the region in an effort to mediate the Taba dispute. Negotiations over Taba have foundered over the wording of the terms of reference for bind- ing arbitration. The pursuit by Peres of a heightened American involve- ment in the peace process and in resolving the lingering tensions surrounding Taba and other as- pects of Israeol-Egyptian ties have taken on a certain urgen- cy as the scheduled turnover of the Prime Ministership to Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir approaches. Under the National Unity government agreement, Peres and Shamir are to switch places in October. Annenberg Cited New York — Walter H.
