land in 1925 as an academic re-
search and resource center on
Eastern European Jewry, the
YIVO Institute has built up a
multilingual library of 300,000
volumes and archives with 22
million documents, including
100,000 photographs.
While the YIVO Institute
preserves historical source mate-
rials on Russian Jewry in numer-
ous collections, its resources on
Russia are incomplete. Dr.
Gitelman said little Jewish
documentation has survived the
50-year onslaught on Jewish in-
stitutions and cultural life in the
Soviet Union. Thus any remain-
ing photographs, albums, post-
cards, autobiographical mate-
rials and personal papers are not
just family memoirs but the
documents of an era.
Photos of schools, theaters, cel-
ebrations,, religious life,
cemeteries, Jewish homes de-
stroyed during the Holocaust,
Jewish landmarks, will all be ac-
cepted, as well as historic photos.
To donate photographs, call Dr.
Gitelman in Ann Arbor, 763-
4393, or in the evenings and on
Sundays in Southfield, 355-3763.
Yeshivah Getting
Back To Normal
Staff Report
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah's
office is nearly back to normal,
following last month's destruc-
tion of office equipment by van-
dals.
According to Rabbi E.B.
Freedman, administrative direc-
tor, "As far as equipment, we're
pretty much back into shape.
We're doing much better."
During Passover, vandals
entered a rear window of the
SOuthfield day school and
smashed windows and mirrors
and ruined office equipment be-
yond repair. Persons from all
Jewish traditions have re-
sponded to the tragedy by send-
ing donations of cash and
equipment.
This week a security system
was installed at the school.
Sgt. Gary Price of the South-
field Police Department said
there are no new developments
in the case and the investigation
is continuing.
