two millenia, Europe has de-
spised the Jews. In a few days,
surrounded by armed guards
and ghosts, the Jews of Rome,
Italy, Austria and the rest of
Western Europe would sit at
their seder tables and declare
themselves "bnai horin" — free
men.
The visitor pays for his drink
and walks past the synagogue
one last time. What makes them
stay here, he wonders: will they
never learn? He knows the
answer. The best he can do is re-
mind himself that HIS Passover
will be in Jerusalem and he is
only one day from home. Ze'ev
Chafets is the author of Heroes
And Hustlers, Hard Hats And
Holy Men.

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
"Jewish lobby" in Washington
was sharply criticized by a
Labor member of the Knesset
who returned last from a visit to
the U.S. She also blasted
Israel's ambassador to the
United Nations, Binyamin
Netanyahu, for proclaiming on-
ly the views of Israeli hawks, to
the exclusion of large opposing
bodies of opinion in Israel.
According to Ora Namir,
chairperson of the Knesset's
Labor and Welfare Committee,
the Jewish lobby's activities
have a negative impact in Wash-
ington and even American Jew-
ish leaders describe the lobby as
out of control. Namir,a leader of
the Labor party's dove-ish wing,
went to the U.S. on a trip
organized by the International
Center for Peace which is asso-
ciated with Israel's Peace Now
Movement.
She said the lobby finances
election campaigns against can-
didates who do not see eye-to-
eye with Israel on. everything
and that this could create anti-
Semitic feelings and harm
Israel. She cited as one example
the Jewish lobby's role in un-
seating Illinois Republican
Charles Percy who was chair-
man of the Senate Foreign Rela-
tions Committee in the 1984
elections. This was not well
received . in Washington, she
said.
She assailed Netanyahu for
publicly praising the American
bombing of Libya April 14 and
criticizing the European coun-
tries which did not support the
punitive air strike. "Netanyahu
represents a very hawkish
stand, but he should be re-
minded that there is another
half in the government whose
representative is Prime Minister
Shimon Peres, and this half
should also have its representa-
tion." She said Netanyahu did
not even represent the entire
spectrum of Likud, his own
party.
