If all of this sounds just a bit too shmaltzy and maudlin for a man known for the sting in his humor, well, it is And there are passages in the book that while obviously sincere seem self- indulgent. The book is written in diary form, chronicling in great detail the events leading up to The Birth and a few col- icky months beyond, from the Greenburgs' unsuccessful at- tempt to conceive on a disastr- ous Caribbean vacation to Dan's overzealous participation in obstetrical exams to practicing natural childbirth techniques to changing diapers. The writing is smooth and easy and the emotions ring true. Most parents have experienced what the Greenburgs went through. This makes Green- burg's chronicle either universal - or trite, depending on your mood. Dan Greenburg's mood these days is mellow. He's enjoy- ing his son, promoting his book (he says it's doing quite well, thank you) and at work on a new book, his 15th, a horror novel. A horror novel from a humorist? Actually, Greenburg already has a thriller to his cre- dit, a popular paperback he Dan Greenburg, who immortalized the Jewish Mother, describes how he has finally become one himself. wrote a few years ago called Love Kills. He says he likes to be unpredictable and not too easily pegged or labeled. As for whether or not he plans to have more children, Green- burg says it depends — on our readers. "If your readers buy enough copies of my book, I might," he deadpans. "Other- wise, Zack will have to grow up lonely and alone. But I don't want to inflict any guilt or any pressure on your readers ..." Campaign To Bar Waldheim Launched Wedding Registry Competitive Pricing 6566 Telegraph at Maple. Bloomfield Plaza 851-5533 STUDIO Los Angeles (JTA) — The Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesen- thal Center last week launched a national campaign to urge the Reagan Administration to im- mediately bar Kurt Waldheim from entering the United States. One million post cards which bear both a 1943 photograph of Waldheim in German uniform and a 1979 photograph of him as UN Secretary General are being distributed nationwide on the theme, "America says no to Waldheim." The post cards, addressed to President Reagan at the White House, read: "In 1947 Kurt Waldheim was charged with `murder and slaughter' by Yugoslavia. Those charges were accepted by the UN War Crimes Commission, of which the United States was a member. As an 'alien' Mr. Waldheim does not have the right to be allowed entry into the U.S. unless he can exhonorate himself of the war crimes charges. Because of the uniqueness and magnitude of Nazi crimes, we urge your Ad- ministration to enforce the let- ter of the law and bar Mr. Waldheim from our shores." The Center was motivated to launch its drive when it learned that Austrian diplomats and business interests had launched an intensive lobbying effort to pressure Washington to allow the likely winner of next month's Austrian Presidential run-off to enter the United States after the June 8 election. In another development, Waldheim said Israel's Minister of Justice Yitzhak Modai was repeating "groundless allega- tions" when he remarked that evidence Israel has obtained so far indicates that Waldheim was at the very least an "accessory" to war crimes committed in the Balkans during World War IL Waldheim responded to Modal in telephone interview with the Jerusalem Post. It was the second time he defended himself in the Israeli media. He told Yediot Achronot that he was being unfairly accused and that he wanted very much to visit Israel if he is elected. Modai's remarks, on Voice of Israel Radio, came after the Justice Minister was given an interim report by a special com- mittee investigating charges that Waldheim was implicated in atrocities against Yugosla- vian partisans and the mass deportation of Greek Jews when he served as an intelligence of- ficer in the Balkans. Wiesenthal Blasts WJC On Waldheim New York (JTA) — The World Jewish Congress was strongly criticized last weekend by Vienna-based Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal and the head of the Vienna Jewish commun- ity over its handling of the charges • against Austrian Presidential candidate Kurt Waldheim. Wiesenthal charged that the WJC tactics used in uncovering the Waldheim documents link- ing him to war-time atrocities against Yugoslav partisans has aided in stirring anti-Semitic sentiment in Austria.
