Rabbi Irwin Groner
tive body.
"(We) are not in the business
of establishing sanctions. It is
our intent to indentify and af-
firm the significance of our
standards." He said the rabbis'
association rarely sanctions ("we
don't say punishes") a rabbi, ex-
cept in extreme cases.
Rabbi Groner was joined at
the convention by Detroiters
Rabbi David Nelson of Cong.
Beth Shalom, Rabbi Noah
Gamze of the Downtown
Synagogue, Rabbi Efry Spectre
of Adat Shalom Synagogue,
Rabbi Kenneth Cohen of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek and Rabbi A.
Irving Schnipper of Cong. Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses.
Rabbi Nelson also voted in
favor of the matrilineal descent
principle. "I'm staying in the
movement. I uphold the decision
of the Rabbinical Assembly."
Rabbis Spectre, Gamze, Rosen-
baum, Schnipper and Cohen also
favored the resolution.
Rabbis Groner, Nelson and
Spectre said there was a sense
of unity at the convention. Ac-
cording to Rabbi Spectre, "even
those who were unhappy with
recent decisions of the Rabbini-
cal Assembly and the Jewish
Theological Seminary, they ex-
pressed their dissent within the
movement. They didn't break
away."
Rabbi Nelson said that al-
though there were a wide range
of views on the issues, the as-
sembly served as a forum to
achieve a balance between the
liberals and the traditionalists.
"We have to find a way of living
with one another. The conven-
tion did this."
Rabbi Groner said the move-
ment's aim is to work toward
ment's
understanding among Jewish
groups. "Our task and mission is
to work for reconciliation and
understanding among diverse
groups in Jewish life, to em-
phasize the central values we
hold sacred. We emphasize this
in all of our programs."
In other assembly business,
the rabbis' association set up a
new committee to rescue the es-
timated 10,000 Ethiopian Jews.
The rabbis also pledged to con-
tinue to face arrest if necessary
when they protest outside Soviet
diplomatic missions in an effort
to free Soviet Jews.
