"I do not endorse this sale of
arms to the Saudis without
some reservations. Saudi Arabia
has not been as supportive of
United States policies in the
region as we all would have like
to see. I am especially concerned
about the Saudis' recent criti-
cisms of United States actions
against Libya. But this should
not lead us to overlook Saudi
Arabia's own firm commitment
to stand as a bulwark against
the extremist forces in the
region."
But Bonior also expressed
reservations about including the
highly-portable, hand-held Stin-
gers in the sale, fearing they
would fall into the hands of ter-
rorists. Without the Stingers,
the sale is reduced to 1,666
Sidewinder air-to-air missiles
and 100 Harpoon air-to-sea mis-
siles costing $250 million.
Many observers believe that
Dingell's vote may have been in
deference to the extensive Arab
population in his district. The
veteran congressman chairs the
powerful House committee on
energy and commerce, and has
been considered a firm supporter
of Israel through the years.
Bonior and Conyers, on the
other hand, have poor records
when it comes to Israel. Former
AIPAC director Morris Amitay,
whose syndicated column ap-
pears in The Jewish News,
wrote last November that
Bonior displays "a great deal of
animosity toward the Jewish
State" and last year hosted a re-
ception for a book written by
former Rep. Paul Findley of Il-
linois, a supporter of PLO chief
Yassir Arafat.
Amitay said of Bonior: "He
has inserted numerous anti-
Israel articles in the Congres-
sional Record."
Those sentiments aside, the
emphasis now shifts from the
House to the Senate, where a
vote could come as early as next
week to confirm the President's
veto and allow the missile sale
to go through.
Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Cal.),
who led the opposition to the
sale, criticized the Administra-
tion for seeking to make the op-
