Pulling The Stinger From Saudi Missiles Three Michigan representatives explain pro vote as the arms package faces the Senate again. BY ALAN HITSKY News Editor The removal of shoulder-fired Stinger anti-aircraft missiles from President Reagan's $354 million arms package for Saudi Arabia will not change the opposition positions of U.S. Senators Carl Levin and Donald Riegle, their offices said this week. Nor will it change the sup- porting votes of the three Michigan congressmen who backed the sale in the House this month. Democrats David Bonior (Mt. Clemens), John Conyers (Detroit) and Johti Dingell (Dearborn) were among the 62 representatives who favored the sale of U.S. missiles to Saudi Arabia before the Saudis agreed to remove the Stingers from their request. "(It is) a goal worthy of the commitment and dedication and best efforts of leaders of the Reform, Con- servative and Orthodox movements," he said. On the question of matrilineal descent, the delegates voted to make the principle a legal standard of the movement. A rabbi who violates the principle. — by officiating at a bar mitzvah or wedding of one whose mother is not Jewish — would be subject to sanction. Rabbi Groner said a Rabbinical Assembly review con- mittee — a Vaad HaKavod — would apply the sanction, but the rabbi said the RA is not aimed at being an investiga- Continued on Page 23 S Births B'nai Mitzvah Classified Ads Editorials Engagements Obituaries • Purely Commentary Danny Raskin Singles Synagogues Women Youth 70 64 73 4 60 86 2 46 72 37 53 66 1 00-1"
