Syria Backs Terrorism To Offset Weak Military New York (JTA) . — Syria's sponsorship of terrorism is based on Syria's knowledge that its military force is no match for Israel's, said Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin last Sunday on ABC-TV's "This Week with David Brinkley." Syria's awareness that it would lose in a conflict with Israel were it to go it alone has spurred it to engage in terrorist acts and their support in order "to escalate ways to engage in confrontation with Israel." Rabin, speaking from Israel, said there are three sectors of potential conflict between Israel and Syria. Citing the Golan Heights as the first such area, Rabin emphasized that the Syrians keep their commitments to armistice in the Golan. In Lebanon, the second sector. Rabin said, the Syrians operate in two ways, both supporting Lebanese resistance against the Israelis and maintaining wha, they can of Syrian hegemony over Lebanon. The third sector, he said, is that of terrorism, either directed by Syria or assisting terrorist. organizations in such acts as the attacks on the El Al counters at the Rome and Vienna airports last December 27. In another development in Tel Aviv, Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin told U.S. Attorney Gen- eral Edwin Meese, at a meeting at the Defense Ministry, tha there were no signs of a military confrontation between Israel and Syria. Meese is in Israel on a week- long private visit.
