THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

OP-ED

THE WRITE WORD

If you find the right gift a chore
And written words don't flow for you,
Let the "write words" from my pen pour,
To make a portrait fresh and new.
A character sketch I will create,
To mark whatever you celebrate.
So let my "Write Words" speak for you,
And convey portraits, Oh so true!

director of the center, • David
Galbraith, president of the Is-.
rael District of the Mormon's In-
ternational Mission admitted (in
1982) that Mormons have been
"friendshipping" Israelis. "You
can engage an Israeli in a
spiritual conversation and talk
about the plan of salvation and
the scriptures all day — as long
as you don't mention baptism."
That is what's called missionary
work. And, that is why most Is-
raelis do not accept so-called
Mormon "guarantees."
Hart's friend, journalist Yosef
Goell (who publically advocates
intermarriage as a solution to
the Arab-Jewish problem!) and
other supporters of the Mor-
mons, argue that even though a
mistake was made in giving this
site to the church, we cannot af-
ford to offend them. They
suggest that our sacred heritage
be bartered for promises of polit-
ical friendship. That's called,
simply, blackmail. It represents
an utter lack of self-respect.
Hart makes no mention of the
Mormon Missionary Training
Manual for Use in the Jewish
Proselytizing Program (in 1978),
nor the Book of Mormon in He-
brew (in 1981), nor the mission-
ary tracts in Hebrew (in 1982).
For whom were these intended?
Hart ignores the conclusions
of the Interior Committee of the
Knesset which recommended
that the building be stopped and
the site returned to the State of
Israel with compensation. The
committee also rejected as "un-
satisfactory and unacceptable"
the "assurances" offered by the
church/BYU.
From the picture of protesters
included in The Jewish News
article, one gets the impression
that only the "ultra-Orthodox"
are opposed. Hart knows better.
He knows that except for a few
politicians, the entire country is
against this project.
Recently, Arthur Kutcher,
former director of the Jerusalem
Municipality Regional Planning
Project, wrote eloquently of the
problem: "... It is the clear duty
of the world Jewish community
to speak out in defense of
Jerusalem's historic and reli-
gious character. Jerusalem is
suffering from the collapse of its
normal defense mechanisms
against ill-considered or exces-
sive development ...
"One may also be appalled at
the lack of sensitivity involved
in the Mormon 'Study Center'
project, which has no connection
whatever to the prominent site
arbitrarily assigned to it on the
Mt. of Olives and which, what-
ever else it may be, is a 250-
room luxury hotel with a
swimming pool overlooking the
Temple Mount.
"Finally one may well be
angered by the Reverend Jerry
Falwell's crudely exploitative
bus-depot shopping center plan
(adjacent to the Old City). City
officials ... have undertaken a
determined and aggressive pro-
gram to commercialize and sec-
ularize the city's heart ..."
In 1982, the Mormons' Gal-
braith said: "It's unfortunate
that we, as church members, so

often have a pro-Israel bias.
We've been blinded to the rights
of the Arab-Palestinian people.
Eventually we have to take the
Gospel to the Arabs and the
Jews, and we won't succeed if
we are politically one-sided."
Jerusalem, to which all Jews
turn in prayer throughout the
world, our holy city, is not for
sale. There is room for all- to
come and pray, but not to prey
on Jewish souls.

Israel Puts
Summer Hours
Into Effect

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Summer-
time came into effect in Israel at
midnight last Saturday, bring-
ing clocks in Israel three hours
ahead of Greenwich mean time
(universal time) and two hours
ahead of British Summer Time
and seven hours in advance of
eastern summer time in the U.S.
The hands of the clock in
Israel were advanced after a
lengthy struggle between Or-
thodox rabbis who fought hard
to prevent its introduction,
claiming that it would interfere
with the times of prayer recita-
tions and allegedly lead to more
Sabbath transgressions, and the
majority of secular Jews with
the acquiescent of many Obser-
vant and traditional Jews.
Israel will revert to standard
time on September 6, to enable
Observant Jews to recite the
pre-High Holy Day prayers ac-
cording to winter time in the
days before the Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur festivals in
October.
Daylight saving time will thus
be in force here for only four
months, because of the lengthy
delay in obtaining Knesset
approval.

Israel Reaches
4.3 Million

Jerusalem (JTA) — On Is-
rael's 38th Independence Day
the country's population stood
at approximately 4.3 million
persons, the Central Bureau of
Statistics announced last week.
These included 3.5 million Jews
(about 82.3), 580,000 Moslems
(13.5), 102,000 Christians (2.4)
and 73,000 Druze and others
(1.7). During the past year, the
overall population grew by 1.6,
with the Jewish population in-
creasing by 1.6 and the other
population groups by 2.7.
In the past decade, Israel's
population has grown by ap-
proximately 700,000 persons, of
whom 500,000 are Jews. The
country's Jewish population has
doubled in the past 20 years,
and since the establishment of
the state the Jewish population
has increased 5.4-fold.
