sented school groups throughout
Michigan.
Rosenzveig emphasizes state
contributions to programs in
other states, but is wary of di-
rect ties and governmental in-
terference. He said a small
museum attached to the Jewish
community Center • in Albany
gets an annual subsidy of
$50,000 from the State of New
York. California just granted $5
million to a Holocaust project in
Los Angeles, but the State has
stipulated that the project be-
come a "tolerance center."
The Holocaust Memorial Cen-
ter board adopted a resolution
this week opposed to a national
Holocaust center under govern-
ment control. The executive
board of Shaarit Haplaytdh —
Detroit's Holocaust survivors'
organization — will soon ask its
membership to withdraw their
support from the American
Gathering of Holocaust Sur-
vivors becaue of the Gather-
ing's support of the national
center. The $100 million project
in Washington has received $2.5
million in federal funding for
development costs, but politics
and Holocaust history worry the
Detroit HMC people.
"The President appoints the
board (U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Council)," Rabbi Rosenzveig
said, "and they are subject to
pressure from every interest
group." He worries about pres-
sures from Ukrainians and
Poles to include their com-
munities as victims of the
Holocaust.
"We have had offers here of
money from other minority
groups," Rosenzveig said, "but
we have always insisted that
there be no strings attached."
He insists that the HMC will
always accurately reflect "what
the Holocaust was ... and for
the foreseeable future this will
be the only" Holocaust center of
its kind in the nation. Its design
has attracted study delegations
from all over the world, and the
rabbi looks to Lansing "for
something more sweet."

New York — An Israeli reli-
gious leader has warned that
Jewish fundamentalism is
endangering his country's
democracy.
Dr. David Rosen, dean of the
Sapir Center for Jewish Heri-
tage in Jerusalem, told a meet-
ing of the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith that re-
form of Israel's electoral process
is essential to prevent the na-
tion from being dominated by
religious medievalists.
Israel's "religious tensions,"
he said, have been produced by
the political framework the
country inherited.
