Armando's has opened . . . with
all the atmospheric flourish that
usually goes with a Mexican din-

Seating is for 160 amidst the
architectural quaintness of , Old
Mexico, Mayan and Aztec or
Nahuatian surroundings . . . Any
resemblance to the former dining
spots at this locale is very much
per chance.
There are the same tables, but
all have been hand inlaid with
tile much like those surrounding
the room . . . Same chairs, too,
but made to look more antique
. . . Padded cushions are now on
the chairs instead of just hard
wood as before . . . They were
made by Armando, who did most
of the work himself in the nine
months it took to alter his new
place . . . Wooden upright beams
are also the same . . . however
scorched and painted to give an
aged appearance.
Waffle-like lattice work is all
around . . . and an upper area on
the raised floor reveals more ta-
bles in intimate privacy . . . Even
the tile on floors was laid by Ar-
mando . : . and he turned plas-
terer, too . . . with the walls con-
verted from their previous look to

Night manager Arnie Wiener
is a northwest Detroit favorite
. . . congenial and cooperative ..
Armando Galan is there morn-
ing, noon and night . . . sur-
rounded by the fine workmanship
of his own two hands.
The bar area, which ,nce was a
lounge separated by piano bar, is
now a dining sector . . . A woocki,
"candelabra" is seemingly i r •
bedded into the wall, 131,,
realistic-looking from afar.
Armando's wife, Joyce, is
ways in the kitchen . . . assisted
by their two sons . . . Jimmy, 19,
and Ricky, 18 . . . Their culinary
experience assures people of
quality food in proper presenta-
tion.
As we've said so many times,
there's nothing so wonderful as
having an owner for your chef.
It was just a visit to see Ar-
mando's new place, but a bit of
eating was on our minds also . . . I
enjoyed the appetizers of pan-
chitas, guacamole and tequitas
. . . The dish of Guisada de Pollo
(chicken stew in Spanish) was.
very good . . . Of course, plenty of
nachos and sauce to munch on be-
fore dining.
A good Mexican restaurant
does not bring you spicy food un-
less it is asked for . . . A common
fallacy is that if Mexican food is
not piquant or tart, it is not good
. . . The proper way to eat Mexi-
can food is to make it spicy your-
self or ask -for the kitchen to put
in the sharp palate stimulating
taste . . . 'Too many people have
been turned off on authenic Mex-
ican food because they've gone to
the wrong place and gotten
burned, so to speak.
Quality is also a very impor-
tant feature . . . and this is some-
thing Armando Galan is most in-
sistent upon at his northwest
place ... which is good thinking
. . . since he bought the place
lock, stock and barrel . . . includ-
ing the land . . . and his reputa-
tion is definitely on the line .. .
Authenticity you can be certain
of . . . Armando is a long-time re-
staurateur and very much knows
right from wrong.
Armando's on Orchard Lake
Rd., between 12 and 13 Mile,
should be a booming success for
Armando and Joyce Galan . .
They'll no doubt spend almost all
their time here . . . and probably
sell the spot they own off
Mexicotown in Detroit.
For certain they'll have many
crowds . . . so give them a break
. . . Remember, Armando's has
only been open about a month .. .
and the "bugs" that go with all
new restaurant operations still
have to be gotten out.

LETTER SENT TO thank
contributors to Passover Seder
held at Jackson Prison ... . by
Rabbi Jeffrey Gale of Temple
Beth Israel in Jackson . . . "I
would like to take this opportu-
nity to thank you for your most
valuable contributions to the
Jewish Inmate Benefit Fund. Be-
cause of the tremendous financial
support that we received from the
Michigan Jewish community we
had plenty of funds to prepare a
most memorable Seder. We had
all the traditional Passover sym-
bols and foods. You can be as-
sured that eveyone had plenty to
eat.
"The Passover Seder was a
most historical event. For the
first time in two years the Jewish
inmates of the various complexes
have been able to celebrate a
major Jewish festival together.
As you know we have had some
legal battles with the Depart-
ment of Corrections. The prison
authorites at Jackson Prison
wanted us to hold the Seder
under conditions which were in-
tolerable. Had we complied with
their regulations we would have
had to have divided 15 inmates
into three groups and to hold
three different Seders. This
would be a strain on those pre-
paring the meal. Because the
Jewish inmates are housed in
different levels of security, it
would also mean that some in-
mates would be allowed to invite
their families and others would
not. I firmly believe that
Passover is very much a family
occasion. The 15 Jewish prisoners
should be able to celebrate
Passover as one united congrega-
tion and all of them should be
allowed to invite family. Fortu-
nately, we were victorious in the
courts. The Passover Seder in
Jackson Prison was truly a festi-
val of freedom.
"Our legal battles with the De-
partment of Corrections are not
finished. We are fighting the
prison authorities in the courts so
that all of the Jewish inmates
will be able to worship together
in the Central Complex. As the
situation stands right now, two
separate services occur at the
same time: one in North Complex
and one in Central Complex. Be-
cause of the small Jewish inmate
population, neither complex can
ever hope to have a minyan. If
the Jewish ,prisoners from the
other complex are allowed to join
their brethren in Central Com-
plex for services we will be able to
make up a minyan and read from
the Sefer Torah on a regular
basis.
"Another legal battle will also
be taking place. We received a
memo from a prison official stat-
ing that he will not tolerate any
teaching of Hebrew in the Cen-
tral Complex. Obviously, this is a
blatant violation of the First
Amendment. You can be sure
that decree will not go unchal-
lenged.
"Thank you again for making
the Passover Seder a reality."
