Rachel Elaine Erdstein,
daughter of George and Janice
Erdstein of Huntington Woods,
will twin the observance of her
bat mitzvah celebration with
Julia (Geulah) Ghinis, daughter
of Boris and Irina Ghinis of Mos-
cow, USSR. The ceremony will
take place at 8:15 p.m. today at
Temple Emanu-El.
Rachel is an honor student at
Norup Middle School in Oak
Park. She attends Temple
Emanu-El Religious School and
studies Hebrew privately with
Marilyn Smith.
Boris and Irina Ghinis first
applied for exit permits from the
Soviet Union in 1978, but they
were denied. The reason given
was "secrecy." They have since
re-applied eight times, but with-
out success. Despite the signific-
ant risks involved, the Ghinises
have become very observant
Jews, active in the Moscow
Jewish community and an impor-
tant contact among refuseniks.
Julia's grandparents, Dr. and
Mrs. Valentin Litvin, and her
aunt and uncle, Yuri and Maria
Litvin, were granted exit permits
from the USSR in 1980 and now
live in the United States. They
have written to Rachel, sending
her pictures of Julia and her fam-
ily and promise to find a way to
let Julia know about this bat
mitzvah. Rachel hopes that her
grandparents, Dr. and Mrs.
Joseph Maltzer, will be able to
visit the Ghinis family later this
year.

Isa Schwarzberg will share her
bat mitzvah with a Soviet Jewish
girl today at 7:30 p.m. at Cong.
B'nai David.
Isa is a student at Hillel Day
School and will share her special
day with Svetlana Polei. Svetla-
na's family has repeatedly been
refused permission to emigrate to
Israel and has been harassed by
the KGB.
This twinning ceremony sym-
bolically links Isa and Svetlana.
Svetlana will celebrate her bat
mitzvah in abstentia since no
Soviet child under the age of 16 is
allowed to participate in a reli-
gious ceremony.
Isa's parents are Kay
Schwarzberg and Jacob
Schwarzberg. Her grandmother
is Tola Schwarzberg.
