Mitzvah Twin
Special Rite

•
Lori Gutov and Ellen Kogan
will twin the observance of their
b'not mitzvah celebration at 9
a.m. Saturday at Adat Shalom
Synagogue with Anna Kvartin,
the daughter of David and Naina
(Ina) Kvartin of Moscow, USSR.
Since applying to emigrate,
Kvartin has not been allowed to
advance in his profession and has
suffered cuts in pay and in re-
sponsibilities. Mrs. Kvartin was
first harassed in her position and
then was forced to leave and now
remains unemployed. Since their
first refusal, they reapply every
six months. In November 1984,
they were told that their request
would not be reconsidered and
would be filed instead.
Mrs. Kvartin's brother, Prof.
Mikhail Marinov, and his family
also have applied to emigrate and
have been refused. Her mother
received permission, but delayed
her departure in order not to be
separated from her children.
The Kvartins are religious
Jews. They are observant and
their children are educated in
Hebrew and basic Jewish values
and history. Despite personal
hardships, they have made im-
portant contributions to Mos-
cow's Jewish community. They
have been active in organizing a
"religious" school which their
daughter Anna attends. (Anna
can read and translate Bible with
Rashi in Hebrew.)
Kvartin has taught in Jewish
kindergartens in Moscow and
Mrs. Kvartin has taught Hebrew
to Soviet Jews who wish to emi-
grate to Israel. They have at-
tempted to persuade the Soviet
government to allow them to
open a Jewish cultural club in the
city. The KGB has hampered
their efforts to pursue this legal
activity.
The Kvartins want to be in Is-
rael to live their Jewish lives
openly.
Lori and Ellen have written
letters to Anna, but have not re-
ceived an answer.

David Kramer, son of Michael
and Zina Kramer, and Andrew
Schlussel, son of Rosanne Schlus-
sel and Murray Schlussel, will
twin their b'nai mitzvah with
Pavel Yusim of Russia at Shab-
bat services at 8:45 a.m. Satur-
day at Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
David has been involved with
the Soviet Jewry movement for
over a year. The first twin as-
signed to him by the Detroit
Soviet Jewry Committee, Stanis-
lav Malyshev, was freed and
emigrated after David had sent
him several letters.
Pavel is the son of Mikhail and
Stalina Yusim. They first applied
to emigrate in 1979 but did not
obtain Pavel's grandparents'
permission. The consent of all
parents is necessary before emig-
ration is possible.
