But as the film rolled on and Alda
pulled the camera back and put
her hair up, she was considerably
less bizarre and more believable.
Playing Alda's kooky mother,
Gis4i is genuinely funny. I don't
recall seeing her display such a
flair for comedy before.
Bob Hoskins is another of the
stand-outs in the film as the
writer who has converted Alda's
book into a screenplay. It trou-
bled me a little at first that he
seemed to be doing a Danny De-
Vito imitation, but once I ac-
cepted that, I found him quite
funny.
Yes, I had a good time at Sweet
Liberty and I think most of you
will, too. Perhaps I hoped for
more from Alan Alda, but maybe
that's not fair because this pic-
ture is fun on its own merits.

Bank Leumi
Chief Resigns

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Ernst
Japhet resigned last Sunday as
chairman and chief executive of-
ficer of Bank Leumi, one of
Israel's largest banks. He was
promptly replaced in both
capacities.
Japhet was the second top
bank executive to step down
since the special commission
headed by Supreme Court
Justice Chaim Beisky released a
report of its investigation into
the 1983 collapse of bank shares
and the ensuing panic on the Tel
Aviv Stock Exchange. The
Beisky Commission recom-
mended that the heads of the
country's five leading banks be
forced to quit within 30 days.
Giora Gazit, board chairman
of the Bank Hapoalim resigned
immediately after publication of
the report.

Paris (JTA) — A 24-year old
Tunisian, Haabib Maamar, was
formally charged here last Mon-
day with the bombings of the
Marks and Spencer department
stores in London and Paris
which cause one fatality and
wounded 13 persons. He is also
charged with bombing the Paris
branch of the Bank Leumi last
August which did extensive
damage to the Israeli bank.
Mark and Spenser is Jewish-
owned.
Maamar reportedly confessed
to the three attacks. He was ar-
rested in Nancy after his French
woman friend, Isabelle Frigerio,
denounced him to the police.
Police said they have found no
links so far between Maamar
and any known terrorist organ-
ization. They have asked inter-
national intelligence agencies for
further information about the
accused man.
