Tel Aviv (JTA) — The ele-
phant and the Jewish question
syndrome has cropped up again
— this time in connection with
thepossibility that miles may
be able to give birth.
The question arose when the
British•magazine New Society
published an article quoting
Alan Trouson, director of the In-
stitute of Early Human Devel-
opment at Monash University
in Melbourne, Australia, as say-
ing that male births were a
theoretical possibility.
And the Jewish-Israeli angle
appeared when Dr. Daniel
Navat, of the Hadassah
Hospital in Ein Kerem, told an
Israel Radio interviewer that he
in Jerusalem and Trounson in
Melbourne had both been work-
ing on fertility and conception
problems, the solution of which
had led to the possibility that
men might be able to give birth
at some time in the future.
Navat explained that he had
been researching the fairly rare
problem of women who are bar-
ren because they are born with-
out fallopian tubes, the four-inch
long oviducts through which the
fertilized egg passes from the
ovary to the uterus during the
first three days of its life.
Since the introduction of test-
tube baby births a few years
ago, Navot said, he and his col-
leagues had successfully im-
plated fertilized eggs directly in-
to the uterus of such women
without oviducts.
Parallel work has also been
done, in Jerusalem and else-
where, on the (also rare)
phenomenon of embryo growth
outside the uterus.
