polemics anticipated Nazi
ideology.
In his thesis, Waldheim wrote:
"The concept of Reich cor-
responds to the innate drives of
the German nation . . . Today,
after overcoming so many... dif-
ficulties and obstacles, the idea
of a unification of all Germanic
groups has been realized —
though in a more disciplined
form."
Waldheim's thesis was not
deposited in the University of
Vienna archives until the early
1970s, when he became a can-
didate for UN Secretary. Gen-
eral. According to Wurm, after
the war, "university faculties in
Germany and Austria frequent-
ly suppressed dissertations they
believed to be Nazi-influenced."

frey Howe confirmed that he
raised the Heathrow bomb plot
at a meeting with Syrian Am-
bassador Loutof Allah Haydar
who he summoned to the
Foreign Office.
Haydar issued a statement
complaining that his country
was the target of a smear cam-
paign intended to justify Israeli
and American military action
against it.

London (JTA) — Syria's ap-
parent link to the thwarted at-
tempt to place a bomb on an El
Al airliner at Heathrow Airport
on April. 17 has placed British-
Syrian relations under severe
strain. An unidentified Syrian
diplomat was expelled from
Britain last week.
The Syrian government had
refused to allow the police to
question him in connection with
the incident, for which a Jor-
danian national, Nezar Hindawi,
is awaiting trial on charges of
attempted murder.
The Syrian Embassy here has
issued a strong denial of any
connection to the attempted
bombing. But Syria's involve-
ment was charged in Washing-
ton, apparently on the basis of
Israeli intelligence intercepts of
radio traffic between Damascus
and the Syrian embassy in
London.
According to Washington, the
intercepted signals included an
order to blow up the Israeli
airliner. President Reagan
warned during the Tokyo eco-
nomic summit that Syria and
other states proved guilty of
supporting international ter-
rorism would get the "same
treatment" as Libya which was
hit by U.S. bombers on April 14.
