The Israeli cries out, "We'll
send our Jewish boys and girls to

We assembled for Seder. We
opened the Haggadah. We re-
counted history. We relived his-
tory as only the Jew in this world
is commanded to do: "In every
generation everyone must see
himself as if he actually went out
of Egypt." One must be physi-
cally, politically, intellectually,
spiritually free with the con-
comitant responsibilities of a
Torah-motivated life — We are
going to Israel.
And so we cross the Red Sea.
As the rabbis stated: "First, up to
our noses in the sea water" and
only then is the blessing of mira-
cle revealed. We argue as Rabbi
Akiva and his contemporaries
argued: "What is the meaning of
the Exodus, of freedom, under
terrorist regimes?" We taste the
bitter herb at the table during a
time when so-called intellectuals
deny the reality of the Holocaust,
when the United Nations equates
Zionism with imperialism. We
remember the cost and determi-
nation that created the State of
Israel. We chant with fervor,
"Next year in Jerusalem" — We
are going to Israel.
We talk to friends and relatives
in Israel. Why are we slaves to
media hype, to television gener-
ality? Is it more or less dangerous
than ever before to go to Israel on
El Al? Does their record of secu-
rity, of safety mean nothing?
Why are the tours one sees today
in Israel mainly those of non-
Jews?
to our shores!" We are not
foolhardy and rash, but we are
also not here in 1986 to over-
rationalize a "safe" existence. If
that is not the fear, if the air
flight is not the anxiety, are we
really one? Do we reject our
birthright in a sudden panic wor-
rying about walking the streets
of Jerusalem? Are we fair
weather brothers and sisters? —
We are going to Israel.
"In every generation . . . We
Americans have not made the
full commitment of aliyah. We
are the Golah, the Diaspora, that

helps fuel the inspiration of the
Geula, those building Israel as
settlers. We need the inspiration
of eye-witness verification; they
need to grasp our hands, to be as-
sured they are not alone in the
world — We are going to Israel.
Sanhedrin states: "Everyone
must say 'For my sake was the
world created.' "
If I were the only one alive,
would it have been justified for
God to have created this world?
Would I have risked leaving
Egypt? Would I have lived for
Torah under repressive govern-
ments? Would I have refused to
take "no" for an answer when the
Jewish state was still merely a
dream? — We are going to Israel!
