Israel Celebrates
Independence Day

/--'

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
celebrated the 38th anniversary
of its Independence on last
Wednesday and the theme this
year was "Democracy in Is-
rael." The Knesset opened its
door to the general public for the
first time. It displayed Israel's
Declaration of Independence
and visitors heard a recording of
the historic Declaration of In-
dependence by Israel's first
Prime Minister, David Ben
Gurion, delivered it to the na-
tion on May 14, 1948.
By tradition, Independence
Day, a festive occasion, is
preceded by Memorial Day, a
day of solemn mourning for the
country's war dead. Memorial
Day concludes with a torch-
lighting ceremony which also
heralds the beginning of In-
dependence Day.

tifications, patriotism and reli-
gious connotations of the 1973
war.
"They invaded Israel while our
people were standing before the
Lord," the narrator stated som-
berly as pictures of the Western
Wall in Jerusalem were shown.
The film also showed a clear-cut
villain, former Egyptian
President Nasser, urging his
people to "slaughter the
Zionists."
Interspersed with footage of
tank battles in the Sinai and
Golan Heights were interviews
with leading Israeli figures, in-
cluding former Defense Minister
Moshe Dayan.
Rabbi Irwin Groner of Shaarey
Zedek spoke at the service. "They
were swifter than eagles and
stronger than lions in their fight
for liberation of their people and
their homeland," Groner said of
the "martyrs" who died in Israel's
War of Independence.
"May the loyal, valiant heros of
freedom and victory be sealed
forever in the hearts of Israel."
The Temple Israel Junior
Choir sang eloquently that the
Israeli war dead had died "for the
future of the•children."

Israel To Submit
Anti-Terrorism
Air Plan

Jerusalem (JTA) — In face of
one of the worst years of aerial
and airport terrorism, Israel an-
nounced last week that it will
submit a comprehensive plan to
combat terrorism against airline
passengers and crew to the In-
ternational Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO) when it
holds its general assembly on
Montreal next September.

. . . no more blood will be shed
and that we can live in peace
with mankind."
Throughout the presentation,
the Israeli flag was flown at half
mast and a memorial torch was
burning.
Also featured were readings of
Hebrew and English poems,
which emphasized what Tauber
called the "wrenching emotional
feeling that comes with the loss of
a dear one." It is a loss that, as
American Jews, "we can't help
but feel and mourn for," but one
that only an Israeli can truly
understand.
"There is not an Israeli who
has not lost a family member or
friend to war," Tauber said.
The film War on Yom Kippur

OFF

After Sinai, many heart patients
require this special equipment.

A baseball mitt and ball.
Not quite the special equip-
ment you might expect for
someone who's hac serious
heart trouble.
But then at Sinai Hospital,
one of the world's leading
cardiac centers, we specialize
in helping our patients do
what they didn't expect to do
again. Our cardiac team
intervenes with testing,
therapy and individualized
treatment.
In fact, last year alone we

over 500 open
leart surgeries. We even
pioneered new techniques
for angioplasty, a procedure
which helps some patients
avoid surgery.
.
Because at Sinai, we work
to put our patients out there
where they belong. Using the
kind of special equipment
they'll enjoy the most..
