Somber remembrance mixed with flag-waving Israeli nationalism was the theme of Monday night's Yom Hazikaron Israeli memorial service in Cong. Shaarey Zedek. "All too often, we tend to fan- tasize about Israel and think it's Utopia," said Joel Tauber, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation, in a speech before 200 Detroit-area Israeli and American Jews. "We tend to think that everything is fine in Israel." Tauber warned, however, that while we often celebrate the "suc- cesses" of Israel's many wars, "it is healthy to stop and for us to understand that these successes have cost us dearly." This cost for Israel's struggle to live in peace while it is sur- rounded by nations sworn to its destruction, he said, has been the most important and precious commodity in Jewish hearts and minds: human life. Tauber cited the numbers of Israelis who have died in each of Israel's wars, starting with the 6,000 who died in its War of Independence. The total was over 105,000, a figure that is "startling, considering the size of Israel," and which did not include Israelis killed in the in- vasion of Lebanon. "Why have they been lost? For what?" Tauber asked the audi- ence and the men and women on stage behind him who carried Is- raeli flags. "All we wanted was the ability to live with our neighbors after centuries of per- secution. All we wanted to do was to be of help to our neighbors and to mankind. Unfortunately, Is- rael has never been dealt with in a logical manner. "It is not enough for us to mourn and to remember. We must today renew our pledge that these people shall not have died in vain. There is no terrorist, no economic crisis, no government on this earth that can destroy Is- rael which we paid for with our blood. Let us hope and pray that
