Christie's Auctions
Rare Printed
Hebrew Books

New York (JTA) — Rare
Hebraica — printed Hebrew
books from the Library of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America — will be auctioned by
Christie's on May 22 in the
firm's main saleroom, 502 Park
Avenue, it was reported last
week.
The Ivan and Seema Boesky
Family Library of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of Amer-
ica is acknowledged as the
repository of the most exhaust-
ive collection of classical
Hebraica and Judaica outside
Israel. Its vast holdings incor-
porate 250,000 volumes, incun-
abula, rare books and 10,000
manuscripts,including an
impressive group of precious
fragments from the Cairo
Genizah.
With the growing interest in
rare Hebraica, the Seminary has
decided to auction a small por-
tion of its Library's rich oldings
— 100 duplicate editions of rare
Hebrew books. This event coin-
cides with the Seminary's Cen-
tennial, which is being cele-
brated this year.
Featured among the many
extraordinary offerings is a
volume of the first Hebrew
printed book, Ibn Sahula's
Meshal haKadmoni. Other
books of special interest include
a Torah printed on vellum in
1491 by Eliezerjoledano, who
established the first printing
press in Lisbon; an important
run of Talmud tractates printed
in Venice in the early 1520's by
Daniel Bomberg, perhaps the
most important early Christian
publisher of Hebrew books; and
a polyglot book of Psalms
printed in Genoa in 1516 and
edited by Agostino Giustiniani,
Bishop of Nebbio.

NBC Criticized
For Terrorist
Interview

Washington (JTA) — NBC
News was sharply criticized last
week by the State Department
for broadcasting an interview
with Palestinian terrorist
Mohammed Abu Abbas, who
masterminded the Achile Lauro
cruise ship hijacking.
State Department spokesman
Charles Redman, contending
that terrorism thrives on pub-
licity, said, "This is the type of
interview that gives terrorists
the platform that they seek.
Such publicity may, in fact,
encourage the terrorist activ-
ities which we are all seeking to
deter."
Abbas, who is sought by
Israel, the U.S. and Italy, for his
part in the hijacking, was inter-
viewed by NBC correspondent
Henry Champ, at a secret loca-
tion in an unnamed Arab coun-
try. In the course of the inter-
view Abbas said that terrorist
attacks will take place in the
future inside the United States
to avenge the American raid on
Libya last month.

A tribute: the gift that brings joy
before it's ever received.

When you honor someone close to you with a JARC tribute — for a
bar mitzvah, birthday, anniversary, memorial, or special occasion —
you'll be bringing them joy.
But before they ever open their tribute, your gift will be bringing joy
to people you've never met. People at the Jewish Association for
Retarded Citizens.
You'll be helping those people realize their dream of living a life of
quality, pride, and dignity. And helping keep hope alive for the
hundreds of others waiting for a home.
Send a JARC tribute today. It's a very special gift that brings joy
before it's ever received.
