Classes have resumed at
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah and the
school is "functioning with no
problems" following the van-
dalism of the interior of the
Southfield day school during
Passover.
According to Rabbi E.B.
Freedman, an assistant adminis-
trator at the school, some tele-
phone lines are working and all
of the glass has been replaced.
Vandals broke into the rear of
the school on April 15 and
smashed classroom windows and
other interior glass and wrecked
office equipment beyond repair.
Rabbi Freedman said office ac-
tivities are slowed because
secretaries are sharing the re-
maining working typewriters.
No books, Hebrew or secular,
were ruined in the incident. Some
maps, however, were destroyed.
"Most of the damage was
mechanical or glass in nature,"
Rabbi Freedman said.
A security expert was due to
meet with school officials this
week. Rabbi Freedman said he
believes the existing burglar
alarm at the school's synagogue,
which was untouched by the van-
dals, may have deterred them. He
added that because the
synagogue is at the front of the
building, highly visible from Lin-
coln Road, it in itself may have
kept the perpetrators from doing
any destruction to it.
Asked if the damage may have
been done by a disgruntled stu-
dent who knew the school's
schedule, Rabbi Freedman said
he was doubtful. He said he could
not think of any incident with
any student that would lead to
such a destructive act.
He said like any school, the
yeshivah has suffered broken
windows and had bikes stolen,
"but those incidents don't lead
into what we experienced."
Officer Gary Conat of the
Southfield Police Department
said that angle and others are
being investigated, but there are
no new developments in the case.
The school still is in need of
office equipment.
One bright note: Although the
kindergartens aquarium was
smashed by the vandals, the fish
are still alive. Rita Morse,
mother of 5-year-old Jonathan, a
kindergartner at the yeshivah,
said her son brought the fish
home to care for during Passover.

"THE UNBEATABLE DEA ER" "THE UNBEATABLE DEALER" "THE UNB ATABLE DEALER"

Washington — Declaring that
Japanese Americans were inter-
ned during World War II not be-
cause of military considerations
but as the result of "racism and
prejudice," the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith has asked
the House of Representatives to
pass a bill providing the inter-
nees redress for their wartime
suffering and loss of liberty.
