wand couldn't think of a place in
California that put out better
music than The Billy Rose Quar-
\ 4- e..t.
He was especially impressed
with the stylings of Billy Marr
. . . of whom it has been said
many times that few people play
a' better piano . . . At one point,
when the band took a break, Billy
Marr did a solo medley on songs
fi,om Yentl.
Durning is unlike so many
movie stars . . . He's a down-to-
earth gentleman you'd consider a
rPgular kind of guy . . . Of friend
Burt Reynolds, with whom he did
the movie Stick, Charles re-
marked that his favorite drink
, -was champagne and cranberry
juice . . . "Burt can get a light
glow and still take care of his
kidneys."
Thanks . . . to Mike George .. .
k for not offering me fat cigars
'anymore . . . The ones he had
were wonderful.
( Billy Rose and Group played
for Don when he had Vargo's on
W. Seven Mile Rd. . . . They were
there six years . . . 1974 to 1980
.=. . Now the Billy Rose Quartet is
ack with Don at 1940
Chophouse . . . Monday nights, 7
\ n .M. to midnight.
/-
The group never sounded bet-
ter than they do today.

JAN WILLEM VAN BE-
- RGEN Henegouwen is food and
beverage director of the North-
fi.eld Hilton, Crooks Rd. and 1-75
exit. Troy.
,--
Before his appointment here,
Van Bergen Henegouwen was
food and beverage director at
Lafayette Hotel, Boston and
Royal Sonesta, Cambridge, Mass.
He is a native of Holland .. .
and also held similar positions at
Helmsley Place, Sherry-
Netherland, Waldorf-Astoria,
New York Hilton and Ryetown
Hilton, all in New York . . . Hotel
. le Provencial in Juan Les Pins,
France, and Hotel de Paris in
Monte Carlo.
He speaks English, Dutch,
French, German, Afrikaans,
Papamiento and Monegasgue
Fluently . . . plus having been
knighted by Knights of Malta .. .
and named a special ambassador
to kingdom of the Netherlands.
WHO'S WHERE . . . Doug
Jacobs and Red Garter Band,
/Sunday brunch 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
at Deer Lake Club, Clarkston.
HAMPTON HOUSEgrand
opening on Northwestern Hwy.
in Southfield, recently, was
clever . . . Folks received a sort of
bingo card . . . and walked to var-
>ious rooms or areas to have their
blocks initialed . . . Each sector
.z:ontained either food, drinks,
hors d'oeuvres or desserts .. .
Those getting all the squares
signed by very congenial
T-Ta pton House employees were
given chances for weeknds here
/or at one outside Chicago.
The Hampton House revealed
quite a setup, with well-
appointed sleeping rooms, three
meeting rooms (with food if de-
* sired), free local calls, indoor
- -ol, whirlpool, complete exercise
Qom, continental breakfast, etc.
. . Barbara Moulin, catering
coordinator, is the kind of lass
>

people can readily tell they want
to work with.
So nice to see Marcella and
Dan Moody again . . . former
owners of Moody's Beef Buffet ten
years, and Paradiso Cafe on
Woodward 12 years . . . She is
now general manager of Bow-
man's Catering who does full food
service for Hampton Inn of
Southfield . . . Bowman's, in its
own quiet way, has become a
giant in the local field of catering.
By swimming pool was some-
thing I've never seen before . . . a
huge roast had been marinated in
brine for months, cooked as
corned beef . . . and hand sliced
. . . Most of the rooms visited had
something different . . . desserts
aplenty . . . drinks . . . cheeses ga-
lore . . . and hors d'oeuvres by the
pool.
The grand opening . . . with its
bingo visitations . . . was one
heck of an idea!
BIGGEST DAY OF THE
YEAR for restaurants is usually
Mother's Day . . . and Kingsley
Inn on Woodward in Bloomfield
Hills already has a count that
staggers the imagination.
More than 7,500 eggs will be
served during brunch and dinner
. . . It would take on hen more
than 22 years . . . 8,134 days .. .
to lay that many eggs, providing
a hen should live so long, or a
work force of 8,134 hens one day
to roll out the 7,500.
Eggs will also be used in the
7,500 muffins, croissants, rolls,
pastries and cakes produced in
Kingsley's own bakery.
The chickens themselves don't
get off scott free . . . 275 of them
being served up fried and baked,
along with 300 pounds of beef .. .
More than 800 pounds of potatoes
will be served . . . and Kingsley's
popular fresh fruit salad will re-
quire 20 watermelons.
About 238 gallons of coffee will
be provided to wash it all down
. . . Of that, 35 percent will be
brewed decaffeinated . . . up con-
siderably over the past five years,
says Jerry Zawideh, general
manager of food and beverage at
Kingsley.
QUICKIE NOTES . . . George
Carlin's concert that was called
off April 26 at Premier Center,
Van Dyke, has been rescheduled
for June 7 . . . Showtimes 7:30
p.m. and 10:30 p.m . . . John Sus-
chak is new director of sales at
Troy Hilton Inn, Stephenson
Hwy . . . coming here from Hilton
Inn and Playboy Club in Lansing
. . . Completion of the new $15
million renovation by Hotel
Pontchartrain on Washington
Blvd. means return of Sunday
brunch at "Top of the Pontch."
