At the conclu- sion of the morning, the students turned in their passports and money for tzedakah, and placed the name of a communal organ- ization on the tzedakah tree on stage. Temple Beth El's Rabbi Nor- man T. Roman addressed the crowd at the beginning of the Tzedakah Experience, and re- minded them that tzedakah means more than charity. "It means justice and righteous- ness," he said, urging the stu- dents to observe how the com- munal organizations applied those principles. Pledges to that effect, especially by Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir to Gush Emunim activists in Hebron last week, may trigger a new confrontation between the uni- ty coalition government partners. Labor and its allies in the government made clear that they will not permit Likud to return to the days when "money was poured into the settlements at the expense of development towns" in Israel. Statements by Housing Minister David Levy and Minister of Commerce and Industry Ariel Sharon indicated that was Likud's aim. Amnon Rubinstein, the Min- ister of Communications, pointed out that the coalition agreement specifically banned the creation of a Jewish settle- ment in the West Bank Arab town of Hebron. The expanded Jewish presence in Hebron was enthusiastically hailed by Shamir. Yaacobi, Minister of Eco- nomic Planning, said he would ask the Cabinet to investigate reports that the treasury, con- troled by Likud, plans to limit tax reductions only to settle- ments which have received such reductions for less than 10 years. That would include the bulk of the settlements estab- lished during the Likud regime from 1977 to 1984. Yaacobi charged this was a transparent attempt to 'grant benefits to new settlements in the territories instead of the financially troubled develop- ment towns. / ligaaaalr G RESUITS • 4►■■•■►■■41.■■♦ / No Purchase Necessary Uptown Southfield Rd at 11 1 : Mile • 559-3900 - / $225.00 * DIAMONDS — PEARLS* A new inexpensive way ♦ to purchase fine j i ■ ., Entries available through May 10, 1986 / // 1/ ';• 49 8., j A RETAIL VALUE Council of Metropolitan Detroit, Children of Holocaust Survivors Association of Michigan, Detroit Soviet Jewry Committee of the Jewish Community Council, Fresh Air Society, Hadassah, Hebrew Fiee Loan, Hebrew Union College, B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, Jewish Association for Retarded Citizens, Jewish Braille Institute, Jewish Chautauqua Society, Jewish Community Center, Jewish Community Council, Jewish Family Service, Jewish Federa- tion Apartments, Jewish Home For The Aged, Jewish Vocational Service, Jewish Welfare Federa- tion, The Jewish News, Metro Detroit Federation of Reform Synagogues, National Council of Jewish Women, • Na'amat (Pioneer Women), Resettlement Service, Sinai Hospital, Union of American Hebrew Congrega- tions, Women's American ORT and Ira Kaufman Chapel. ❑ )/ Entry blanks available only at rf • : Find out more by t calling • .
