MIKE & MARY
deal was very close to comple-
tion.
Commander Burgren said
that Kfirs this past year flew a
total of 3,060 combat hours. He
predicted that they will fly 4,500
hours during their second year
in U.S. service.
While the Americans had
many nice things to say about
the Israeli-made planes, they
were also quite frank in discuss-
ing some of the negative aspects
of the Kfirs. Bergren, for in-
stance, noted that the Kfirs did
not pose enough of a challenge
to a good pilot flying a top-of-
the-line F-14 fighter. The U.S.
Navy hopes to bring some faster
and more sophisticated F-16's
into the training program to
help meet this challenge.
Burgren also noted that the
Kfir uses more gasoline that the
F-5's in the program.
But both Burgren and Ried-
neau agreed that those setbacks
were more than made up by the
other positive aspects of the
Kfirs. They also pointed out
that the U.S. Navy hopes to
bring over to the Oceana base an
Israeli Kfir pilot in the coming
months to help the Americans
"fine-tune" the training
program.
Our community is indeed blessed by the presence of
Mike and Mary Must who for many years have given
their time, energy, and financial help to various Jewish
causes. Now comes an opportunity to say "Thank You"
to these dedicated people. Mike and Mary will be hon-
ored by the Hillel Day School on Tuesday, May 13th. I
urge you to join in this worthy tribute to Mike and Mary
Must.
