ruary 1986 — received wide-
spread publication by the media
throughout the country.
Mr. Amitay also refers to the
insurance, energy and banking
PACs as examples of just three
interests that far outnumber the
pro-Israel PACs "which Common
Cause singled out". The innuendo
here is that Common Cause has
ignored these other interests and
their PACs. In fact, Common
Cause has issued campaign fi-
nance studies dealing with each
of these three industries in recent
years.
The Common Cause PAC
studies do not reflect a position
on each of the various public pol-
icy positions that are taken by
the approximately 4,000 groups
that have created PACs. Rather
the studies reflect our deep con-
cern that the PAC campaign fi-
nance system is inimical to our
democracy and that the present
system for financing congres-
sional races must be fundamen-
tally reformed to protect our
representative system of gov-
ernment .. .
Mr. Amitay has done a severe
disservice to truth and accuracy.

Cheering The Ban
On Death Penalty

A FIVE-PART SYMPOSIUM

Three loud and well-deserved
cheers to Rabbi Conrad and the
other rabbis who have spoken out
against the death penalty! Simul-
taneously, I am troubled by the
letters of your readers who use
isolated anecdotes to condone
murder by the state (May 2).
There has been no evidence to
show that the death penalty acts
as a deterrent to murder. In fact,
some experts feel that a small
surge in the murder rate is noted
following an execution.
Secondly, the inherent fallabil-
ity of the system as well as his-
tory tell us that innocent persons
will be murdered by the state. It
is one issue to ask, "If it were
your innocent brother murdered
by those thugs, what form of jus-
tice would you want?", but when
those thugs become the state, its
unclear that justice is really ever
served.
We read of incidences of the
exoneration of once-believed
criminals many years after the
alleged offence. Had they been
executed, how many condemna-
tions to the electric chair would
we take back then, to give those
citizens back to their families?
Thirdly, as a civilized society,
we like to think of rehabilitation
as the ultimate goal of the penal
system, but will settle for having
criminals simply, "taken off the
street" . .
Finally, let us think of the
children. I don't want my chil-
dren growing up with the state
telling them that murder is ac-
ceptable in certain circum-
stances, because it's not. Its not
OK to kill people. Its not all right
to sanction murder .. .
