force that can bind American
Jews together. Calling American
Jews "the largest, most prosper-
ous, best educated, perhaps most
highly organized, and certainly
the freest Diaspora community in
all of Jewish history," he pointed
out that "many in our community
are cut off from the greatness of
Jewish civilization by a wall of
ignorance."
We need a cultural framework
in which Jewish expression can
thrive, a cultural framework in
which we can strengthen Jewish
memory, enhance Jewish knowl-
edge, and stimulate Jewish
creativity. If we are to be suc-
cessful in holding the community
together, it will be the quality of
Jewish life that attracts people —
a Jewish culture with quality,
excellence, variety, and a set of
values that relates to our Jewish
heritage."
Funding is the bottom line to
achieve these goals and the foun-
dation is expanding its efforts to
attract governmental support.
Detroit's five-part symposium,
"Jewish Popular Culture: Media
and Messages," is part of a na-
tional five-city anniversary sym-
posium for the foundation. The
National Endowment for the
Humanities contributed
$155,000 for the series, which is
being held in Cleveland, San
Francisco, Houston and Atlanta,
as well as Detroit.
Zeltzer's goal as president of
the National Foundation for
Jewish Culture is to continue and
expand the programs. "I expect to
travel extensively to corn-
munities to press the role of the
foundation and how it benefits
the local communities," he said.
What we create nationally inter-
acts locally . . . Educating a
scholar here will help a Jewish
studies program and students
elsewhere as the scholar lectures
and teaches."
He emphasized that the sym-
posium series is not just for
scholars. "This is for everybody.
It is very open, and for the pub-
lic."
Zeltzer, a former president and
executive vice president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation, is
currently director of endowment
development for Federation. He
was formerly president of Ameri-
can Savings and Loan Associa-
tion.
