Horwitz has been appointed to the new position of associate publisher of The Jewish News, according to publisher Charles Buerger. Horwitz will be responsible, with Carmi Slomovitz, for the day-to-day management and leadership of The Jewish News, including its news, advertising, circulation, production depart- ments and community relations. He will work closely with Buerger and editor Gary Rosenblatt on charting the publi- cation's record growth and con- tinued improvement in content. Horwitz, 32; said he is "excited by the prospect of helping to shape the future of one of the finest Jewish newspapers in America in one of the finest Jewish communities in the coun- try. I look forward to meeting with, and talking to, a cross- section of the community to as- sure The Jewish News keeps in touch with the needs of its readers and advertisers." Buerger said he was "delighted to bring on board someone with an outstanding education and ex- cellent experience in newspaper publishing as well as a deep in- volvement in communal Jewish life. I am certain that the rela- tionship between The Jewish News and the community will continue to flourish and grow even stronger with Arthur here." Prior to assuming The Jewish News position, Horwitz served as marketing and research manager of The Baltimore Sun, responsi- ble for planning, organizing and implementing strategies and programs designed to build readership, circulation and ad- vertising. His news room experi- ence was obtained at the New Haven (Conn.) Register and Journal Courier where, over a 10-year period, he was a reporter, copy deskman, bureau chief and columnist. While in Baltimore, Horwitz was a member of the Jewish Community Center's board of di- rectors, its executive committee as an officer, and chairman of its marketing committee. In Connecticut, Horwitz was a member of the New Haven Jewish Community Center Board of Directors, Horeb Lodge, B'nai B'rith and Connecticut Valley Region's B'nai B'rith Youth Organization board. Horwitz received a bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut and a master's de- gree in management from the Yale School of Organization and Management. David Gubow will act as emcee for an afternoon of fam- ily fun on May 18 at 1 p.m. at the main Jewish Community Center. (The Israeli Independence Day kickoff, originally scheduled for Wednesday at noon in downtoi,vn Detroit, has been canceled.) The May 18 "Celebrate Israel" program features an address by Sen. Donald Riegle beginning at 1:30 p.m. A Jewish War Veterans color guard will open the cere- monies, during which Michigan's 12th Maccabiad athletes will be honored. Also to -be recognized are Michigan youth who have worked or studied in Israel as part of formal programs from 1985-1986. Beverly Liss will pre- sent them with certificates of honor. Entertainment will be pro- vided by the Abraham Ben Ze'ev Band and Hora Aviv Dance Troupe. The formal program will close with Larry Jackier's presentation of awards to members of the win- ning team in the Israel knowl- edge quiz. Students from 14 area religious and Hebrew day schools will participate. All day long, booths will be open for sales of Israeli-made products and t-shirts bearing the "Celebrate Israel" design. More than 20 organizations will participate in a display, ti- tled "A Walk Through Israel," which will show work, study, and travel opportunities in Israel.
