`Beautiful Laundrette'
Fails Its Good Acting

I have to admit that I went to
see My Beautiful Laundrette
(rated: R) with the expectation
that I would like it. I had read
and heard a lot of good things
about it. Hope springs eternal.
I can't say that I did not like it;
but, on the other hand, I did not
find it a very satisfying experi-
ence either. For, while it has in-
triguing characters, and while it
is interesting sociologically and
politically, it just doesn't come
together dramatically. _
The story focuses on a young
Pakistani, Omar, in present-day
London: his relationships within
his own family, with his closest
English friend, and with a bunch
of racist English punks.
There are a variety of inci-
dents, some violent, some ironic,
some funny. And the scenes of
Pakistani family and business
life have depth and texture.
But the film doesn't take us in-
side the characters, so we never
fully understand their motiva-
tions. Further, the characters
don't develop or change much
through the course of the picture.
The performances throughout
are excellent, however. Daniel
Day Lewis is astonishing as
Johnny, Omar's English punk
friend. I had a hard time believ-
ing that this tough, street-smart
hoodlum was being created by
the same actor who played the ef-
fete snob, Cecil, in A Room With
A View. The two roles couldn't be
more different. And Lewis is to-
tally convincing in both. He
should become a very important
film star.
Gordon Warnecke, as Omar,
also turns in an outstanding per-
formance. He has an inner
charisma and a charm that jumps
off the screen. His 5,000-watt
smile should take him a long way
in movies.

What I found less convincing
was the relationship between
Omar and Johnny. Yes, we see
that they are close friends. But
what causes them to become lov-
ers? And, aside from the fact that
it makes both of them feel good,
how do they react inside to the
relationship? •
The director, Stephen Frears,
has staged some touching and
some very funny scenes. But the
playwright, 29-year old Hanif
Kureishi, has not given him a
screenplay that succeeds in min-
ing the dramatic conflicts and in-
terplays that are inherent in the
situation.
Many of today's movie-makers
are so intent on avoiding the
carefully structured "well-
made-play” with its pat plot de-
velopments that they over-react
and give us a succession of
amorphous, undefined vignettes.
The result is that we sit there as
the reels of film unwind, waiting
for the thing to get started. And
just when we think we're getting
somewhere, the end title comes
up.
I'll give the production full cre-
dit for being original and inven-
tive. But I think there's more of a
story inside these characters
than the creators were able to put
on the screen.
