trate. If others had done the same
from the beginning, we wouldn't
be in the situation we're in."
Shoshani said he hopes that
America's action will be the be-
ginning of the end of that situa-
tion. "You better believe that
Qaddafi will think twice before
launching another attack. If
Libya understands that there
will be a price to pay, terrorism
might finally come to a stop."
"But," he added, "in the mean-
time, the tourism business will
continue to suffer."

French Caught
By Extremists

London — The director of the
European Foundation of the
Anti-Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith believes that French Jewry
is now "in dead center between
an alliance of extremism" of Jean
Marie La Pen's Front Nationale
and Shi'ite extremists.
Addressing the annual plenary
meeting of the International
Council of B'nai B'rith, Shimon
Samuels declared that La Pen's
movement and Moslem ex-
tremists "strengthen and feed
into each other" in France.
The Front Nationale "is no
longer a fact-finding" organiza-
tion, he said, adding that as a re-
sult of the recent election, Front
Nationale has become an impor-
tant political force which the new
rightwing government will need
if it is to be able to govern certain
areas.
"The Front Nationale will be in
the nitty gritty of power," said
Samuels.
Samuels appeared on a panel
discussing extremism and ter-
rorism. Another panelist, Henry
Morris, chairman of the British
Board of Deputies' Jewish De-
fense Committee, chastised the
press for ,its coverage of ter-
rorists.
"If society is destroyed by ter-
rorism, the first casualty will be
freedom of the press," he said.
Morris called on the press to "re-
sist the corruption of language"
in which terrorists are called
"freedom fighters." e urged the
rrorists "a
press not to give
ey have no
platform to whic
civilized right." ...
Another plenary speaker,
Great Britain's Chief Rabbi Im-
manuel Jacobovitz, praised
PopeJohn Paul II for his decision
to visit a Rome synagogue.
"If a pope had done this a
thousand years earlier, it might
have saved millions of Jewish
lives," including those lost in the
Holocaust, he said explaining
that the Holocaust rose in part
from "fundamental Christian
anti-Semitism."
Rabbi Jacohovitz said he c ioes
not, share the current concern
over the.declining Jewish popula-
tion. Statini that the British
Jewish community might drop
from 350,000,,to 300,000 by the
turn of the century, he declared
that the 300,000 "niay, be more
knowledgeable and more com-
mitted as Jews than the 350,000
they replace."
