Dr. Friedlaender was honored

brary of Yiddish Classics. A fre-
quent contributor to "Commen-
tary" magazine, she is the author

"The Best of Sholem Aleichem."
Programs scheduled for May
15, 17, 19 and 21 include "Funny
It Doesn't Sound Jewish: A Study
in American Popular Culture"
and "Communicating Jewish
Culture in the 1990s."

Yiddish literature at McGill
University in Montreal, will ad-
dress the question, Does Jewish
Culture Matter"? 8 p.m. May 14
at the Maple/Drake Jewish
Community Center.
The event is the first of five
local programs scheduled
through May 21 to explore the
theme, "Jewish Popular Culture:
Media and Messages."
At the opening session and re-
ception, Dr. Zvi Gitelman, profes-
sor of political science at the Uni-
versity of Michigan, will be re-
spondent, and Joel D. Tauber,
president of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, will serve as chair-
man.
According to Tauber, each of
the five presentations will
explore a different aspect of
American Jewish culture. The
first program will consider
whether contemporary Jewish
culture measures up by the
standards of American popular
culture.
The local presentations are
part of a series of public programs
entitled "Creativity and Con-
tinuity: Jewish Culture in
America" funded in part by a
grant from the National Endow-
ment for the Humanities and
presented by the National Foun-
