Ex-Nazi Held
In Prison

New York (JTA) — Karl Ul-
nas, who was a Nazi concentra-
tion camp commander in
Estonia during World War II, is
being held at a federal prison in
Manhattan because of concern
that he, might flee the country,
federal officials said last week.
Linnas, who was stripped of
his U.S. citizenship in 1981, is
appealing a 1983 deportation
order issued because of his par-
ticipation in war-time atrocities.
A three-judge panel of the U.S.
Court of Appeals in Manhattan
heard the appeal. Their decision
is pending.
Linnas, 66, of Greenlawn,
Long Island, is fighting depor-
tation to the Soviet Union. Neal
Sher, head of the Justice
Department's Office of Special
Investigations, said officials
were concerned that Linnas
might imitate Bohdan Koziy,
62, a Ukrainian who was living
in Florida. He has been ordered
deported from the U.S. for alleg-
ed war crimes and for misrepre-
senting his war-time activities
when he entered the country. He
fled to Costa Rica in 1984 before
he could be deported.

Never A Due Bill...Always A Cash Refund

rrN

New York, April 22 (JTA)-
Soviet Jewish refusenik Bet-
valel Shalolashvili was sen-
tenced to a one-year prison term
for "draft evasion" after a two-
day trial, the Student Struggle
for Soviet Jewry (SSSJ)
reported here last week.
The 22-year old Tbilisi stu-
dent asserted that he had never
received his draft notice. The
SSSJ said that the KGB has
told Shalolaskvili's brother, Yit-
zhak, that "the charge was in
retaliation for the latter's efforts
to prevent the official destruc-
tion of the Ashkenazic syna-
gogue in Tbilisi."
The U.S. Congress was in-
formed last February of re-
ported plans by the Soviet
authorities to bulldoze one of
the few remaining synagogues
in the Soviet Union in order to
build a public square in its place.
The Tbilisi Jewish community is
estimated at 20,000.
Shalolashvili and his family
first applied to emigrate in
April, 1985, and their applica-
tion was refused last August
without any explanation.
