children in their forties and fif-
ties, were invited to the Jewish
Community Center and. intro-
duced to the Jewish community,
they received a standing ovation.
When their grandchildren saw
their parents and grandparents
beaming, they felt so proud that
they too stood up for recognition.
Recently, Ignacy died, a week
before his 92nd birthday. His
family invited a Jewish friend to
say a eulogy at the St. Ladislaus
Church in Hamtramck. Only two
other Jewish people showed up.
Some of Ignacy's friends felt good
when they heard about his
heroism; others looked the other
way as if they didn't care. It was
later learned that they were
among those who collaborated
with the Germans in World War
II.
At the cemetery, a friend of the
family remarked that it was time
for a dialogue between Poles and
Polish Jews. He admitted that be-
fore the war Polish anti-Semites
wanted the Jews out of Poland,
and now there are no Jews and no
Poland.
The oldest son, Zachary, tries
to keep in touch with the Jewish
community. When asked why he
didn't apply for an award from
the State of Israel for saving the
life of Abram Kashtan and other
-Jews, he replied, "This is not for
me to do." A Jewish friend is pre-
.? paring the necessary papers so
that he too can officially be rec-
ognized as a Righteous Gentile.
Some people who would not
even think of risking their lives
to save a stranger are suspicious
of the Righteous Gentiles. I've
heard the comments "A goy is a
goy. They probably got paid in
gold or hiding Jews."
There were cases during the
war when gentiles hid Jews, took
all their possessions and then
turned them into the police or the
' SS. For some it is hard to believe
that in time of bastiality there
was a bright spot like the Hriut
kas, the Bloems and the
Charazyczewskis.
It is a horrible thought that
during a future crisis, when the
safety of the Jewish people would
be in danger, one of the
grandchildren of the Righteous
might feel in his heart: "Why
stick my neck out for a stranger.
My grandfather did it and look
what happened to him. While the
Commandment Love Thy
Neighbor As You Love Yourself
was so deeply inscribed in his
heart, he died a forgotten man."

13 cents), shot her, then put her
in the trunk of her automobile
and set the car on fire. She was
the mother of five children.
I strongly support the death
penalty.
