He's a dealer." Another customer uncovered a set of drill bits. He paid 50 cents each for them. They were still in their World War II, water-tight package. "Those star drills were sitting around here for 40 years," Irving Wine said. - "They were lying undei something else and he just found them. They're worth $6, maybe $8 apiece." Just standing around watching bargain hunters rummaging through countless items brought back memories to Wine: "I used to take packets of sea dye out of the raft survival kits and every time we had a snow I used to throw out three packages" on to Q Grand River. The car tires would pop the packets "and from here to Liver- nois the snow was painted green. Cars would pick it up in the snow and take it down the street, so it would attract to this place. "I used to do a big volume of business. Everybody knew the joint. I knew every trick in -the trade to attract attention." And Wine knew tricks essen- tial for making a go of his busi- ness in the early stages when he didn't have any money. Among his first deals was the purchase of heavy tarps for cover- ing jeeps. Wine said he paid $4 each for a large quantity and sold them to Detroit Edison for $20 each. The utility wanted more and Wine knew of a company in Indiana that made them. He bought new ones for $10 and sold. them — 1,000 of them — to Edi-• son for $20. "I was always in debt," he said. "I bought more than I could sell; that's why I still have surplus. For the last 25 years I've been liv- ing off the gravy train, but for 15; years I was in debt." He pointed to Army trench coats and explained: "I bought' these coats, all the government had, for $5 apiece. I had to buy 'em all, so I bought 10,000. At $5 apiece, that's $50,000. I didn't have the $50,000 until another deal. One deal took care of an- other." • Gary Wine said, "My dad made nice living. He didn't carejle - always told-me,-'You don't maise money when you sell it, you make money when you buy it. If you buy it right, you'll eventually sell it. .. "We don't follow any business practices that they taught me at Wayne State — (like) you turn your inventory over four times a Year and at the end of the year you make your cutdowns and dis- counts and move it on. We don't believe in that. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. It's just that it's not the way my dad made his money. "Everything in the warehouse — about $10 million worth of merchandise — is 100 percent paid for. We do not have a line of credit at the bank." Said shopper John Patterson, a 30-year Barry's customer from Southfield, "This has sort of been a catch-all corner, like a giant garage sale. You never know what you'll find. If you're any kind of tinkerer or handyman, this is the ideal place. Barry's al- ways been very fair with his prices." Moments later a man bought a wool Army trench coat — one of 500 Barry's is selling — for $5. Another 30-year Barry's shopper standing nearby, Alex LaFoun- tain of Southfield, said, "It's the end of an era. He'll be missed." ❑ , , Aluminum 1" Horizontal Blinds Wood 1" & 2" Horizontal Blinds Vertical Blinds Pleated Shades Woven Woods New Vz" Aluminum and Wood Micro-Blinds The Great Cover - Up 5665 W.
