According to Rabbi Syme,
Kaufman's affection for his heri-
tage is very strong. "He is a very
proud Jew. When he was well he
always was at services. He took
his Judaism seriously." Rabbi
Syme remarked that Kaufman
has high regard for Jewish prac-
tices, and it showed in the way he
ran his funeral business. "He al-
ways had respect for Jewish tra-
dition."

In recognition of his devotion,
Kaufman was awarded the Prime
Minister's Medal from State of Is-
rael Bonds and a resolution of
appreciation from Temple Beth
El.
Yet, Kaufman is not one to
take without giving something
back. To the Shaarey Zedek arc-
hives, he donated wire and tape
recordings of dignitaries who
spoke here or on radio and TV.
He also donated recordings of the
late Rabbi Adler and late Cantor
Jacob Sonenklar.
His interest in youth is well
known, according to son Herb
Kaufman, and in recent years he
recorded B'nai and b'not mitzvah
and gave the tapes to the celeb-
rants.
Family parties, an aliyah at
Shaarey Zedek on the first day of
Passover, recognition from the
birnah at Temple Israel during
his great-granddaughter's nam-•
ing and a family brunch are
among the festivities marking
the Kaufman birthday.
Looking back on all his
achievements, the love of his
family and respect from his col-
leagues, does Ira Kaufman have
any regrets?,
"Really, none."
