Named Desire, starring Vivien
Leigh. Bikel soon took over the
second male lead, Mitch, in the
play. From Streetcar on, Bikel
went on to do numerous stage
and screen portrayals.
Bikel has been repeatedly
nominated for Emmy awards. His
performance in The Defiant Ones,
won him an Academy Award
nomination as best supporting
actor. In Fiddler on the Roof bikel
portrayed Tevye to critical
acclaim.
While a student in London,
Bikel began to seriously develop
an interest in the guitar and folk
music as another professional
endeavor. Now one of the world's
best-known folk singers, he
maintains an active schedule ap-
pearing in concert both solo and
with symphony orchestras
throughout the United States
and abroad.
Bikel is currently a vice
president of the International
Federation of Actors, and a senior
vice president of the American
Jewish Congress. He has been on
the board of Amnesty Interna-
tional and was appointed by
President Carter in 1977 to serve
a five-year term on the National
Council for the Arts.

Yom Hazikaron
Observance Set

Jewish. Welfare Federation
President Joel Tauber will open
community-wide Yom Hazikaron
memorial services on May 12 at
7:30 p.m. at Cong. Shaarey zedek.
The day preceding Yom
HaAtzmaut (Israel Independence
Day) is Israel Remembrance Day,
when those who died in the
Jewish state's six wars are re-
membered and honored.
For' the local observance, the
Israeli community of Detroit
joins with the Jewish Community
Council, sponsor of Israel Inde-
pendence Day activities, in shar-
ing Israel's national day of
mourning. The service will in-
clude prayers, poetry readings,
bantoriat hymns, participation of
children, and presenting of colors
by Israeli War Veterans. An
Israeli-produced film will follow.
When Benny Schwarz, Israel
slialiach, follows Tauber in open-
ing the Yom Hazikaron cere-
monies with a message in He-
brew, a week-long series of
events to mark Israel Indepen-
dence Day will have officially be-
gun.
• On May 14 at noon. in
downtown Detroit's Kennedy
Square, Israeli folk dancing and
singitig will kick-off Israel's 38th
birthday celebration, sponsored
by the Jewish Community Coun-
cil in cooperation with the Jewish
• Welfare Federation and the De-
troit ZioniSt Federation.
The week concludes with a
"Family Fun Day" at the main
Jewish Community Center at 1
p.m. on May 18.
