track of is, as a Heritage Founda-
tion report puts it, his "ability to
adapt whatever coloration is best
able to hide the organization's
real nature at any given moment.
Through its fronts and publica-
tions, it continues to influence
thousands of Americans, 'Who
have no inkling of the bizarre and
viciously anti-Semitic conspiracy
theories that underlie its philos-
ophy. Moreover, this tendency to
create a new front whenever it
appears that a new issue has
emerged and can be capitalized
on, makes it necessary to remain
ever watchful for the latest of the
cult's creations."
It also is what scares the
Jewish community so much, says
Norton.
"It's the same thing that Far-
rakhan touches. They openly ex-
press anti-Semitism and that
hasn't happened for a long time
in this country except by aber-
rants. It has not been a socially
acceptable attitude since World
War II. And so when Jews hear it
and see it on TV it's something
they're not used to and so it's
frightening."
Frightening also because of
what happened to bring on World
War II.
"You can't talk in simple terms
about what happened in Ger-
many," says Levine. "There are
too many differences. It's hard to
see how any group like LaRouche
could ever gain significant politi-
cal power here. But we'd be
foolish not to take them seri-
ously."
Especially, he says, because
their new-found fame may very
well cause them to be more "out
there."
"At airports now they're not
carrying 'Nuke Jane Fonda'
signs. Now they have signs with
an American flag and the saying
'This is LaRouche country.' "
That new boldness, said
Levine, is why it's so important to
act. "They've gone beyond the
formative stage. We need to go
out there and expose them for
what they are and nip it in the •
bud.
"The best way to deal with it is
exposure," agrees Kotzin. "We
can't be either complacent or
alarmist. We must be realistic.
America 1986 is not Germany
1933. On .the other hand what
happened did happen and we
can't ignore it. We can't say it
will never happen because it did.
We must identify them for what
they are."
And if we do, says Levine, the
American people will take care of
the rest.
"This country has an overall
commitment to pluralism. I am
absolutely convinced that as long
as that's strong, they don't have a.
chance. As long as we know who
they are and what they believe, I
don't think the American public
will respond to them." ❑
