GOING TO THE AIRPORT?
BUSINE OR. VACATION

Detroit's

I. Goldstein

against several of the defen-
dants dealt with the Nazis'
war against the Jews, which
they prosecuted almost as a
second war alongside the hos-
tilities against the Allies. It
is interesting to note that
while defendants like Goering
denied knowledge of or re-
sponsibility for the Holo-
caust, others like Frank and
Speer acknowledged direct or
indirect responsibility.
It did not occur to any of
the accused at Nuremberg to
deny the factuality of the an-
nihilation of European Jewry.
Hans Frank, the governor-
general of Poland, the land on
which the Nazis erected their
most horrendous death
camps, experienced a reli-
gious conversion during his
confinement. This conversion
apparently induced in him a
candor which prompted his
famous statement:
thou-
sand years will pass and this
guilt of Germany will not be
effaced."
Frank also had the unwis-
dom to keep a diary in which
he detailed facts about his
own culpability in what the
Nazis euphemistically called
"The Final Solution to the
Jewish Question." (The Nazis
loved to use the word "Ques-
tion" because it suggested
that the issue had been raised
by others; they were only re-
sponding to it.)
In that diary, Frank made
entries such as the following:
"As far as the Jews are con-
cerned, they 'must be done
away with in one way or
another...We must annihilate
the Jews. We now have ap-
proximately 2.5 million of
them in the government-gen-
emal, perhaps with the Jew-
ish mixture and everything
which goes with them, 3.5
million. We cannot shoot or
poison those 3.5 million Jews,
but we stall nevertheless
take measures which lead to
their annihilation."
Hans .Frank was more or
less correct about the dif-
ficulties in murdering so
many people, but he did not
count on the resourcefulness
of the Nazi murder machine.
A witness on behalf of
Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Ru-
dolph .Hoess, one-time com-
mandant at Auschwitz, con-
firmed for the tribunal the ex-
tent of the death camp "suc-
cess" in exterminating its in-
mates. In a flat and unemo-
tional voice, Hoess told the
jurors at Nuremberg how it
had been possible to murder
two and a half million people.
Hoess indicated with a cer-
tain pride how the Auschwitz
gas, chambers were made
more effective than the Tre-
blinka model. In the latter,
only 200 people at a time
could be killed. At Ausch-
witz, Hoess introduced Cy-
don B gas and expanded the
gas chambers to include 10
