floating in the Jewish atmos-
phere that before the end of the
century the divisiveness between
Orthodox and differing elements
will lead 'to a calamitours under-,-
mining of anything approaching
cooperative Jewish commitments
assuring an honorable Jewish
Oneness.
The obligation to iron out the
serious differences and to "nar-
row the widening gulf" threaten-
ing Jewish unity was tackled by
close to 300 lay and rabbinic
leaders, including professionals
in major Jewish movements, at a
Princeton, N.J., conference under
this sponsorship of CLAL: Na-
tional Center for Learning and
Leadership.
Many of the views expressed
there may hopefully Teed to the
"tolerance" that is so vital to
human existence. CLAL leader-
ship Dr. Irving Greenberg, who
has courageously pursued the ef-
fort to assure abandonment of ex-
tremist obstructions to unity,
called attention to a lack of vision
which causes the Jewish commu-
nity now to spend $10 million a
year on Jewish-Christian
dialogue and not even a fraction
of that amount on inner dialogue.
This rebuke, indicating a lack of
treatment of various communal
needs, may lead to a realization
that while civic duties are relev-
ant the Jewish urgencies should
not be ignored. It was on the need
for unity that Dr. Greenberg ad-
vocated that Jews develop "dual
loyalties — to his or her own de-
nomination and to the idea of the
peoplehood of Israel." He qual-
ified it by asserting: "To Jews we
say, for such dual loyalty is a
willingness to confront one's own
group for the sake of the greater
Jewish community, and to find
unifying rather than separatist
solutions. Each denomination
can be strengthened by the other.
The non:Orthodox can learn
discipline and observance from
the others white the Orthodox
can learn from the openness and
commitment of the liberal
groups, thus making each gioup
more competent to deal with the
vast majority of unaffiliated
