Page 14 Effort To Undermine Kaddafi Continues BY WOLF BLITZER Special to The Jewish News For a brief moment last week, there was a sense of glee in Washing- ton that Libyan leader Muammar el-Kaddafi was perhaps already dead or had fled the country because of an ongoing coup. But, alas, Kaddafi pop- ped up on Libyan television. He seemed very much alive even if the broadcast had been previously vid- eotaped. But that disappointment has not stopped senior Reagan Administra- tion officials from continuing to work for Kaddafi's overthrow. The massive aerial strike against military and terrorist targets in Libya was publicly justified by the Ameri- cans as part of their "legitimate self defense" in the struggle to pre-empt more Libyan-sponscred terror. Yet U.S. officials privately conceded that they had also hoped to severely weaken the Colonel in the process by encouraging those dissenting forces within Libya, especilly in the mili- tary, to revolt. President Ronald Reagan, Secre- tary of State George Shultz, Central Intelligence Agency Director William Casey and other U.S. policy-makers have not only been dreaming about that scenario from their first days in office, but they have actually taken action to achieve it. So far, there has not been a complete success. But Continued on Page 20 Detroit To Host National Series "Jewish Culture in America" is theme of foundation anniversary symposium. Marking the 25th anniversary of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, more than 20 local Jewish agencies and organizations will pre- sent "Jewish Popular Culture: Media and Messages," a five-part sym- posium May 14-21 featuring out- standing Jewish scholars and lectur- ers from major institutions through- out the. country. Detroit is one of only five cities selected to host the symposium, part of a series of free public programs exploring the theme, "Creativity and Continuity: Jewish Culture in America". Funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, "Creativity and Con- tinuity" will explore the nature of Jewish culture in this country in an effort to create a better understanding of the relationship among Jewish and American values and cultural ex- pressions. Under the auspices of the Na- tional Foundation, the series is spon- sored by the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion of Detroit and its United Jewish Charities, in cooperation with the Jewish Community Center and the Midrasha-College of Jewish Studies.
