Judge Jessica Cooper
Judge Jessica Cooper, South-
field's 46th District Court chief
judge, has announced her candi-
dacy for the open seat on the
Oakland County Circuit Court
bench.
She is seeking the position
being vacated by retiring Judge
Frederick C. Ziem, whose term
expires Dec. 31.
Cooper, 40, has served for
seven years on the District
bench. She was first elected in
1978.
Cooper has bachelor's and
juris doctor degrees from Wayne
State University. She began her
career as an assistant defender
in the State Appellate Defenders
office in 1973. She opened her
own law practice in 1975, spe-
cializing in criminal and
juvenile law, divorce, discrimi-
nation, real estate and personal
injury.
Cooper serves on the boards of
several community services, in-
cluding HAVEN, Oakland
County's domestic violence shel-
ter and sexual assault counsel-
ing center; Jewish Family Serv-
ices; and the Anti-Defamation
League. She is also active in the
Business and Professional
Women's section of the United
Jewish Appeal.
She is a founding member of
the National Association of
Women Judges and served as its
publication editor; a member of
the Women Lawyers Associa-
tion; and a member of the State
Bar Committee on Standard
Criminal Jury Instructions.
Judge Cooper is a graduate of
the National Judicial College
and presently serves on the fa-
culty of the Michigan Judical
Institute.
Other legal affiliations in-
clude the Michigan District
Judges Assocation; Oakland
County District Judges Associa-
tion of which she presently
serves as vice president; Oak-
land County Bar Association;
Southfield Bar Association; and
the Women's Bar Association of
Oakland County.
