THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 8 Friday, April 18, 19$6 ~ .4 HNION ISRAEL INSTITUTEAF TECHNOLOGY EDUCATING ISRAEL'S FUTURE No university in history has played so vital a role in creating a nation. • Settlers in early Palestine found that much of the land was swamp or, worse still, bone-dry desert. Practical skills and imagination were needed to reclaim the land, build homes, roads and bridges - the. infrastructure of a nation.. • Technion-Israel Institute of Technology opened in 1924. From its inception, the school's intended purpose was to "combine science with practical work," a role the Technion has fulfilled with increased sophistication and success. • "A country, with poor soil and lacking in essential raw material, can win the difficult battle for survival only by developing the intelligence and expert knowledge of her young people . . . I have seen with great satisfaction how well the Technion fulfills this important task?) Albert Einstein • Since independence, the Technion has been indispensable to Israel's agricultural and industrial development, economic growth and national security. Its engineers, scientists, and architects have literally built the modern State of Israel. • While Israel's priorities have changed; the need for applied technology is more essential than ever. The expansion of science-based industries is vital because it can ensure productivity in a land of scarce resources. But Israel must have many more engineers in order to fulfill its industrial potential. • • The Technion is more than a university. It is a vital national resource through which Israel can educate the thousands of bright men and women needed for its future. The Technion has never been more crucial to Israel than it is today. Its scientists and engineers represent a new hope: by using brainpower, science based industries will be able to compete in the world's marketplaces so that Israel will achieve economic independence.
