There's no school. Since it's a
holiday people aren't out mis-
sing work. When you see people
finish (the race) it's like in hoc-
key waiting for a fight. It's like
the Bataan death march."
When people ask him why he
runs marathons he responds, "I
don't know."
"You're not running for health
when you're running two or
three marathons a year," he
says. "It's got to be an ego
thing."
For those who don't run, the
thought of running even a few
miles — let alone 26 or 50 or
100 — is difficult to imagine.
Says Gelfond: "It's the
greatest time for me to sort
things through. Sometimes
when I get home I have to rush
in and get a pencil and write
things down."
Runners like to talk when
trotting side by side, Gelfond
says. Sometimes it makes for in-
teresting.perspectives.
"I passed another runner and
I overheard him say he smoked
marijuana," Gelfond relates
"That shocked me that anybody
could be a runner and do that.
And another time two guys were
disagreeing about something in
the Bible. •They got in a big
argument and almost started
fighting."
Although there may not be
many Jewish runners from De-
troit in Boston this spring, there
remains plenty of serious run-
ning in the area, and a lot for
fun. .
"One guy had a running
party," explains Gelfond, "and
so he went out and, just like in
the marathons, got T-shirts for
everyone. And one guy had a run
in honor of his son's Bar
Mitzvah."
While running with Marc
Saidman, Gelfond says, Seidman.
mentioned.he'd be 40 soon. "So I
said to him, 'How about running
40 miles on your birthday?' ...
And we ended up running on his
birthday from Ann Arbor, where
he had gone to school, to West
Bloomfield, where he lives, 40
miles. There were three or four
of us who ran the whole dis-
tance."
Gelfond says during another
occasion he mentioned to Louis
Milgrom when Milgrom •was 60
that "when . ,he goes on Social
Security we'll have to run 65
miles." Now he's 65, Gelfond
says, "but we haven't found
anybody yet who wants to .do
that." 0
