I 1 ; ; J 71 Which is not to say, said Robert son, that we have to be alike or that he's interested in bringing Jews to Christianity. "An impor- tant part of Christian tradition is to welcome diversity, to feel that all are free to worship God any way they want. If you are a deep- ly committed Christian, you are tolerant of others, love pluralism, don't try to force your views on others. We resist coercion any way we can. True Christians are for freedom." And it is that love of freedom, among other things, he said, that unites Jews and Christians. "We're not enemies. We share a common love of freedom, decency, our roots go back to the begin- ning. We share common values, a religious heritage that brought forth Western civilization. We're not enemies. Our common enemy is the pervasive secularism that is corrupting Christian and Jewish children on to drugs, into cults. Together, we can stand against the forces that would destroy Israel, would take away the things that make America the great hope for the future." It is to make sure those forces are stopped, Robertson said; that he may very well run for president. "People are concerned about their families, concerned about defense, concerned about the growth of government. They want to stop the effort of some to disarm us against the threat of the Soviet Union. They want somebody to succeed Ronald Reagan who thinks as he, and I, do. And so they're urging me to get involved. "I've been overwhelmed by the number of people calling me, tell- ing me to run. I guess if you speak from your heart, people respond. I'm not a put-on. I don't read someone else's speeches. I speak in a way that touches people. "People are saying we really have a moral crisis, the family is in trouble, society is in trouble, there is a deep malaise, a hurt. They say something has to be done about it. And so they're look- ing to me. And I may just do it." Joseph Aaron is a Chicago-based writer.
