Merkaz Issues
Pesach Guide
The Merkaz, the laymen's
organization of the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis, has made
available its annual Passover
KosherGram.
The guide instructs kosher
consumers which products are
fit for Passover use, including
those which don't require
kosher-for-Passover certification.
Among the more popular
items listed for use this
Passover are: aluminum foil,
Hershey's cocoa, ReaLemon
lemon juice, commercially pack-
aged nuts (raw, uncolored, un-
roasted, with no additives), plas-
tic wrap and bags, Big Chief
and Domino sugars (white
granulated, brown, Brownu
lated), and wax paper.
The Passover KosherGram, a
special. edition of the regular
kosher bulletin, lists medicines,
cosmetics, cleaning agents and
foods which are permissible for
Passover use.
Under general information,
there are special instructions
about the use of egg matzah,
buying chometz after Pesach
and about products derived from
legumes. Information about
specific products also is avail-
able.
According to the Merkaz, an
effort was made this year to find
products for Passover use which
don't require special kosher-
for-Passover certification, there-
fore making . it easier on the
kosher consumer's pocketbook.
The Merkaz prints more than
9,000 KosherGrams at each
printing, and they are mailed
throughout the country and the
world, serving nearly 100,000
consumers.

The Metropolitan Kashrut
Council of Michigan has made
available a list of grocery items
that carry the council's kosher-
for-Passover certification. For
information, call the kashrut

Chometz Disposal
Is Available
The city of Southfield has
designated special dumpsters for
the disposal of chometz on Tues-
day and Wednesday at each of
the fire stations in Southfield.
The fire chief asked that the
primary disposal should be for
foodstuff, and. that it should be
placed in plastic bags that are
tied and placed inside the.
dumpsters.

Seven Who Dared The Immortal Seven

Americans, Americans, yes, truly
In Every sense of the word
They came together — welded
Into one single composite unit
Voluntarily, eagerly to serve
their country.
Front line soldiers from seven
Different walks of life.
Never will I ever forget
Their smiling-faces at breakfast
They entered the portals
of my heart
Now to stay forever, here
And into the hearts of all Americans.
In my rented airplane deep in the
Brazilian jungle.
Scarce could I believe my
eyes
74 seconds after lift-off
it happened
It shattered me completely
I sat there watching, unbelieving
the telivision
I was completely numb, cold,
immobilized in shock.
I saw it again and again
And each time it pierced
My heart, deeper and deeper
and then I wept
Large, uncontrollable tears
Until there were no more.
On one of thy trips
The missionary priest (my friend
for the last 5 years)
Asked me and my cohort, Dr. London,
A prominent cardiologist — my guest,
To see an 8-year-old black girl
Who had been burned over
80 percent of her body.
Later, .1 retreated to my room
set aside for my prayers
I said our sacred prayers
Reserved for our own beloved
dead
A Kaddish (Y iskadal) 7 times
For each of these beloved
•
seven.
The Kaddish is a very unique
Jewish (Hebrew) prayer.
Actually, the language is
"Aramaic prose poem
Sanctifying God's name and praying
for the speedy coming of his kingdom?'
These are the words of our
writer, Herman Wouk.
He goes even further,
"It is a beautiful dithyramb with
Strong rhythms and stirring sounds —
A power aura of respect for
the dead.
He is touching the hand of
the departed
There is no mention of death."
Every year. for 20 years
I flew to Annapolis, Goias, Brazil
To do an eye surgical cataract
• free clinic (at my own expense)
Removing 25 cataracts daily
Then, for one week, I flew into
the hinterlands
To visit the many tribes to
Check their eyes, etc.
One year I became very brave
And visited the Chavantes (head hunters).
The minute I saw her,
We dropped everything,
Wrapped the child in a blanket
She already was in early shock.
We flew her and her mother
Back to the famous Evangelical
Fanstone Hospital in Anapolis,
My surgical base.
Here we were in no man's land
Two Jewish doctors flying a
Black Catholic child to a
Christian evangelical hospital
as a life and death emergency.
As we neared the city
We flashed the distress signal.
The mother, became more agitated
crying. now in shear desperate
anguish.
She pointed to her child — morte.
The pulse was very faint now —
The pupils were almost fully dilated,
a very bad sign.
The mother asked me to say
a prayer (I understood Portuguese)
I lit a match and made
the sign of a cross with it
and'said a Kaddish, aloud.
In my own words I added •
Kaddish begins the heal
upon the tortured soul.
I knew the Lord would forgive me
Because he brought three different
religions
Into one unit, fighting for
Precious life of this tortured child.
Once before I said a Kaddish
To a person not of my faith
As I put the child on the
waiting stretcher
She died in my arms.
I looked at the mother
and shook my head.
She already knew. •
My heart cried out in sheer pain
Oh how desperately I prayed
for success.
The mother came and put her
arms around me.
Greater thanks hath no man.
How proud I am of these
magnificent seven
the immortal seven
These type of people do not
really die
Th ir bodies are gone
But what they did voluntarily
Will Ube forever in our lives.
They now belong to all of us
The Lord opened the doors
• of Heaven
And beckoned unto them
Keeping the doors open for
our prayers to ascend
unto them — to clothe them
with our love.
I never spoke a word to these
I never held their hand
And my own motto:
I care not the color of their
skin
I care only for the man within.

They were pioneers in the
True sense of the word
Blazing a pathway for those
Who will pick up the pieces,
put them together and march
forward.
They paid the price, the supreme
For all those who went before
And those who will surely follow.

buried together as a single unit, in Arlington
Cemetery.
We would need permission from the De-
fense Department and the families of the se-
ven.
A special walk-in mausoleum in the
shape of the inner compartment of the Shut-
tle.
Inside, the photo of the seven at the
breakfast table, still toOther as one.
That's the visual picture I would like to
carry in my mind.
