thodox were prodded by their
colleagues to resign.) Next, he
saw as beneficial the creation of
an assembly of Jewish scholars
from all movements to "find
solutions to contemporary chal-
lenges of Jewish life."
He implored the Lubavitch
movement to declare a
moratorium on its campaign for
Who Is A Jew legislation in Is-
rael, and finally, suggested that
communities have more meet-
ings to discuss Jewish unity.
The ultimate solution, he said,
is that Jews must demand that
the current situation cease and
that the rabbis start talking
with each other. "Orthodox and
Reform rabbis can share a plat-
form and nothing bad happens,"
he said.
Concluding, Syme issued a
warning: "We lost one genera-
tion to violence. Let's not lose
another to internal strife."
In a question-and-answer
period following the speakers,
Rabbi Lookstein agreed that the
beginnings of a solution come
from just talking to each other.
"If we can sit down and talk,
nothing is absolutely 'undo-
able.' "
Members of the audience
seemed pleased by what they
heard. Arlene Gould said such
discussions "hold a great deal of
hope for us." Alice Mandelbaum
saw the forum as a starting
point for what she said she
hoped would be future gather-
ings. Janis Waxenberg said she
detected a positive reaction from
the audience. "As Jews we have
more uniting us than dividing
us."
U.S. Investigates Death
Threats By LaRouche Unit
New York (JTA) — The United
States Justice Department has
launched an investigation into a
death threat by the Lyndon La-
Rouche organization against a
federal official, according to a
journalist whsi was guest on a
radio talk show here last week.
The investigation was pro-
mpted by a July 7, 1985 edit-
orial in the LaRouchite publica-
tion, New Solidarity, which
called for "death sentence"
against Neal Sher, director of
the Office of Special Investiga-
tions which deals with Nazi war
criminal cases.
The same threat was leveled
against former Congresswoman
Elizabeth Holtzman, who spear-
headed congressional efforts
against Nazi war criminals, and
Charles E. Allen, Jr., the jour-
nalist who revealed the devel-
opments on the talk show.
Allen, who provided documenta-
. tion linking LaRouche with a
leading Nazi rocket scientist,
Krafft Ehricke,in his book, Nazi
War Criminals in America:
Facts.. Action: The Basic Hand-
book, is described by the media
as the "preeminent authority"
on Nazi war criminals in Amer-
ica.
'Allen also said on the WNWK-
FM talk show "Jewish Views
and News," hosted by Shifra
Hoffman that the Federal
Bureau of Investigation is
reportedly looking into the
death threats, and has brought
the matter and the circum-
stances surrounding it to the at-
tention of a federal grand jury
in Washington, D.C. currently
investigating the LaRouche
organization. Allen did not
name his Justice Department
source.
The grand jury is primarily
concerned with alleged financial
irregularities in the LaRouchite
National Democratic Policy
Committee (which has no con-
nection to the Democratic
