Fancy Funerals Deplored
By Rhode Island Rabbis

Providence(JTA) — The
Rhode Island Board of Rabbis
has issued a statement urging
utmost simplicity in the conduct
of Jewish funerals in line with
the concept that all are equal in
death.
The statement stressed that
ostentation at funerals "is con-
trary to Jewish tradition and
practice." Family and friends
should contribute to worthy
caused in memory of the de-
ceased individual instead of
sending flowers. The board also
urged the use of a simple
wooden coffin, as the Jewish
tradition mandates.

With reference to the "meal of
consolation" mourners tradi-
tionally partake of upon return-
ing from a funeral, the Board of
Rabbis stated it should "not be a
social occasion." Elaborate
meals should be avoided, and
the food should be provided by
friends and relatives, not the
mourners.
"Mourners shall not consider
themselves hosts who serve
their visitors during shim," the
seven-day mourning period,
either, the statement continued.
Visitors should not expect or
encourage the "creation of fes-
tive hospitality."
