Abraham A. Weberman, president of Shaarit Haplaytah, and Sonia Popowski, chairman of the academy, said that the 27th of Nissan was designated as the. Yom Hashoah — Holocaust Remembrance Day — and the organization adheres to this date as closely as possible (usually the Sunday preceeding it). A candlelighting ceremony by the survivors of the concentra- tion camps and ghettos, accom- panied by the children of Holocaust survivors, will be led by Mrs. Popowski. Cantor Max Shimansky, Cong. Beth Achim, will chant memorial renditions. He will be acccompanied by Rochelle Peterson. Weberman will welcome the assembly and brief greetings will be extended by the follwo- ing participants: Leon' Halpern, president Holocaust Memorial Center (HMC); Henry S. Dorfinan, chairman, executive committee, HMC; Robert Slat- kin, president, Jewish Commu- nity Center; Franklin J. Ellias, associate chairman, Holocaust subcommittee, Jewish Commu- nity Council; Robert A. Arcand, director, Greater Detroit Table of the National Conference of Christians and Jews; Dr. Irving Gastman, Junior Division, Shaarit Haplaytah; Rev. James R. Lyons, executive director, Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies; Charles Silow, president, C.H.A.I.M. (Children of Holocaust Survivors Association in Michigan). Rev. John T. Pawlikowski, professor of social ethics at the Catholic Theological Union, con- sultant, International Council of Christians and Jews and the Is- rael Interfaith Association, will be the recipient of the righteous Among the Nations of the World Award. Dr. John J. Mames, chairman department of oral history and Holocaust studies, will pay tribute to the Righteous Gentiles and make the presenta- tion. Flutist Miriam Ciesla, will render memorial musical selec: tions and will be accompanied, by Ms. Peterson at the piano. Shari Ferber will give a recita- tion. Proclamations, resolutions and messages and will be ac- knowledged by Arthur Weiss, Junior Division Shaarit Hap- laytah. Rabbi Charles H. Rosenzveig, director of the Holocaust Memo- rial Center, will deliver the memorial address. The academy will be con- cluded at the Eternal Light, Holocaust Memorial Center, with individual • yahrzeit candlelighting and memorial prayers. The community is in- vited. Holocaust Event Hosts Griffiths • Martha Griffiths Lt. Gov. Martha Griffiths will address the annual State of Michigan Holocaust Remembr- ance Day ceremonies scheduled for May 6 at noon in the Capitol Building Rotunda in Lansing. The Jewish Community Coun- cil is coordinating Detroit's par- ticipation in the program, at the request of Michigan's Manage- ment and Budget Director, Robert Naftaly. Betty Rotberg- Ellias, who designed a Yom Hashoah program for use by Hebrew school children, repre- sents Council on the planning committee. Michigan's lieutenant gover- nor will deliver a gubernatorial proclamation to Jewish Com- munity Council President Leon S. Cohan declaring May 4 through 10 as Holocaust Re- membrance Week in Michigan. Rep. Maxine Berman will preside over the ceremony and will present a similar legislative proclamation, The commemoration will focus on children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, a candlelighting ceremony, involv- ing the reading of poems written by children in the Terezin (Theresienstadt) concentration camp. - Zelda Robinson, chairman of the Jewish Community Coun- cil's Holocaust Subcommittee, announces that the Council, in cooperation with Shaarit Hap- laytah, Children of Holocaust- Survivors Association in Michi- gan (C.H.A.I.M.), and the B'nai B'rith Albert Einstein Lodge, has arranged for a bus to take those people to Lansing who cannot or would prefer not to ,drive. The bus fare is $1, pay- able in advance to. the Jewish Community Council or at board- ing. Reservations should be made in advance, since space on the bus is limited, and passengers without, advance reservations will only be seated if seats are available..
