received Present Tense Joel
Cavior Literary Awards, pre-
sented annually to authors of
the best books on Jewish themes
published in the U.S. Winners
were:

Biography'autobiography:
Jehuda Reinharz, Chaim Weiz-
mann: The Making of Zionist
Leader (Oxford; Fiction: William
Herrick, That's Life (New Direc-
tions); History: Michael Marrus,
The Unwanted: European Refu-
gees in the Twentieth Century
(Oxford); Religious thought:
Robert Alter, The Art of Biblical
Poetry (Basic Books); and Gen-
eral non-fiction: Charles Silber-
'man, A Certain People: Ameri-
can Jews and Their Lives Today
(Summit).

In addition, the awards, which
are sponsored by Present Tense
magazine and the American
Jewish Committee, included a
special "Citation for Lifetime
Achievement" to Irving Howe,
author of World of Our Fathers
and other works, and editor of
Dissent magazine.

Stanford Buys
Baron's Books

Palo Alto, Cal.(JTA) — Stan-
ford University has purchased
the collection of 20,000 scholarly
books, manuscripts, pamphlets,
and journals on Jewish history,
culture and religion belonging
to Profesior Salo Baron, the
noted historian.

The university said the pri-
vate collection, which includes
300 rare volumes and is valued
at $1 million, will make it a
major center for the study of
Jewish culture.
