Vienna (JTA) — Presidential
candidate Kurt Waldheim
asserted at a news conference
here last Sunday that efforts to
substantiate his alleged war-
time Nazi past had finally col-
lapsed after proving only that "I
was a soldier in the Wehrmacht
like 100,000 other Austrians."
Waldheim repeated earlier
claims that he had not become
a member of either the Nazi SA
or the . National Socialist Stu-
dent Organizations, and that his
only link to these groups was
that he had participated' in
riding tournaments and discus-
sions with the groups. Accord-
ing to *Waldheim, he had not
known anything about the
deportation of Greek Jews from
Salonika during the time he was
stationed nearby that city.
Meanwhile, at the United Na-
tions, the world organization
has reportedly agreed to provide
Israel with access to documents

on Waldheim contained in the
archives of the War Crimes
Commission of the UN. Israel's
Ambassador, Binyamin Netany-
ahu, filed a formal request with
Secretary General Javier Perez
Cuellar for access to the files of
the longdefunct. Commission.
Waldheim, who served as UN
Secretary General from 1972-81,
rejected reports that he might
back down from his campaign
because of the allegations raised
against him in thd past weeks.
In a related development, Wald-
heim's campaign committee
presented nine witnesses who
spent time. with Waldheim
before or during World War II.
All of them said they were "not
personal friends" and all of them
confirmed Waldheim'a argu-
ments that he had not been a
Nazi, that he had not taken part
in atrocities during the war and
that he had not known anything
about the deportation of Jews
from Salonika.
